Chapter 6 - A Lie Dressed in Silver.

Martin sat alone in Adrian's study with his former security badge on the desk between them.
Outside, police moved through the mansion and photographed the cellar passage.
Inside, Adrian watched the man he had trusted for eleven years struggle to decide how much truth to tell.
"My name was Martin Crane," Martin finally said.
Adrian stared at him.
"Crane."
"Gideon is my half-brother."
The admission landed harder than Adrian expected.
"You worked in my house under a false name while your brother handled my family's legal affairs."
"I changed my name before I met you."
"That does not make it better."
Martin rubbed both hands across his face.
"Gideon and I stopped speaking when I was twenty-three."
"Why?"
"Because I caught him moving money through accounts that belonged to vulnerable clients."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"And you never thought to mention this while I paid him to protect my daughter's trust?"
"Your wife knew."
Adrian stood so fast that the chair behind him struck the wall.
"Stop using Evelyn as permission to lie to me."
Martin absorbed the anger without defending himself.
"She hired me privately before you hired me as security."
Adrian went still.
"For what?"
"To watch Gideon."
The photograph from the cellar suddenly made sense in a way Adrian did not want it to.
Martin, Evelyn, and Mara had not been friends posing in a greenhouse.
They had been working together.
"What did she suspect?"
"That Gideon was passing information about the trust to someone outside the family."
"Julian."
Martin nodded.
"She never proved it."
Adrian paced toward the window.
"Celeste said Julian has been inside my life for years."
"Celeste says whatever keeps attention away from Celeste."
"Did you delete the camera footage?"
"No."
"Could Gideon have my password?"
Martin hesitated.
"Only if someone recorded you entering it."
Adrian thought of his office, his phone, the security panel, and the dozens of people who moved through the mansion during the gala.
A knock sounded at the door.
Nora entered without waiting.
Her face was bloodless.
"Sir, Lily is gone."
Adrian's world narrowed to those four words.
"What do you mean, gone?"
"The nurse fell asleep in the library."
"She fell asleep?"
"She says she only drank the tea that was already on the tray."
Adrian was already moving.
They searched the upper floor, the kitchen, the winter garden, and the cellar entrance.
No Lily.
No rabbit.
Then Nora found a red rose on the library windowsill.
The window was open despite the rain.
A trail of petals crossed the terrace toward the estate greenhouse.
Adrian ran through the storm without a coat.
The greenhouse doors stood partly open.
Inside, wet leaves shone under emergency lamps.
"Lily!"
A small voice answered from behind the rose beds.
"Daddy?"
Adrian nearly collapsed with relief.
He found her crouched beneath a worktable, hugging the white rabbit.
She was frightened but unharmed.
He pulled her against his chest.
"Why did you come out here?"
Lily pointed toward the far end of the greenhouse.
"Mommy's music was playing."
Adrian heard nothing except rain on glass.
"What music?"
"The song from my baby room."
Nora arrived behind them and stopped abruptly.
On a potting bench sat a small silver music box Adrian had not seen since Evelyn died.
Its lid was open.
Inside was a folded card written in Evelyn's handwriting.
Adrian opened it with shaking fingers.
There were only six words.
IF THEY FIND THE CELLAR, RUN.
Then Martin called from the greenhouse entrance.
"Adrian, don't touch anything else."
He was staring at the muddy floor.

A fresh set of footprints led into the greenhouse.
But no footprints led back out.
