Chapter 9 - The Room Behind the Wall.

The steel door behind Arthur Vale's portrait had no visible handle.
A keypad was embedded in the frame.
Adrian stared at it while police technicians photographed every inch.
"Do not open it until the bomb unit clears the wall," one officer warned.
Adrian agreed, though impatience burned through him.
Three hours later, the door was declared safe.
The keypad required eight digits.
Martin tried Arthur's birthday.
Nothing.
Adrian tried the date Julian was disowned.
Nothing.
Nora stood behind them holding Lily's rabbit.
Lily herself had finally fallen asleep upstairs with two officers outside the room.
Nora looked at the keypad.
"Try Miss Lily's birthday."
Adrian frowned.
"My father died before she was born."
"Mrs. Vale was pregnant when he died."
Adrian entered the date.
The lock clicked.
No one spoke.
The steel door opened into a narrow office sealed inside the wall.
A desk stood beneath shelves of old financial records.
There was no dust.
Someone had used the room recently.
A computer monitor still showed a faint standby light.
Martin swore softly.
Adrian crossed to the desk.
On top sat a vase containing one fresh red rose.
Beside it was an envelope with his name.
ADRIAN.
The handwriting was not Evelyn's.
It was Arthur's.
Adrian had seen his father's handwriting on contracts, birthday cards, school reports, and the letter that announced Julian no longer existed to the family.
He knew every hard angle of it.
His hands turned cold.
The envelope contained a single sheet.
If you are reading this, Evelyn failed to keep the family buried.
Adrian read the sentence twice.
Martin leaned closer.
"There's more."
The letter instructed Adrian to check a numbered file in the desk.
Inside were records proving Arthur had created an offshore structure decades earlier to hide company losses.
Julian discovered it and threatened to expose him.
Arthur responded by disowning Julian and blaming him for missing money he had not taken.
Years later, Gideon Crane helped Arthur move the hidden accounts into charitable foundations.
When Evelyn married Adrian, she discovered irregularities while setting up Lily's trust.
She began collecting evidence.
Adrian felt sick.
His father had built the original fraud.
Gideon had maintained it.
Julian had known the truth.
But one question remained.
Why had money recently been moved through Celeste's charity?
A folder labeled C.V. answered part of it.
Celeste had received enormous secret payments over the last two years.
Some were marked CONSULTING.
Others were marked COMPLIANCE.
One was marked CHILD ACCESS.
Adrian's stomach twisted.
Nora read over his shoulder and whispered.
"They paid her to get close to you."
Adrian thought of the first time he met Celeste at a museum fundraiser.
Her perfect laugh.
Her careful sympathy about Evelyn.
The way she seemed to understand exactly how to make Lily comfortable.
Had any of it been real?
Martin opened another drawer.
Inside lay a passport.
The photograph was of Julian Vale, older than Adrian remembered but unmistakable.
The passport was issued only nine months earlier.
Julian was alive.
The name on the passport was not Julian Vale.
It was Alexander Voss.
A.V.
Adrian stared at Evelyn's initials list again in his mind.
G.C.
C.V.
A.V.
Alexander Voss was not Arthur.
May you like
It was Julian.
And according to the passport stamps, he had entered the country three days before the gala.
