Chapter 12 - The Letter Nora Hid.

Adrian listened to the recording five times.
Each time, the voice of Alexander Voss became more familiar.
Not because he knew Voss well.
Because beneath twenty years of age, a rougher accent, and a slower cadence, Adrian could hear the older brother who used to argue with their father behind closed doors.
Julian had been inside the mansion during the gala.
Adrian had shaken his hand.
He had thanked him for a donation.
He had never recognized him.
Shame mixed with fury.
Martin stopped the recording.
"The audio proves contact, not murder."
"It proves he lied about who he is."
"It also proves Evelyn was afraid of both Julian and Gideon."
Nora stood near the fireplace, twisting her fingers together.
Adrian noticed.
"What else are you hiding?"
Nora looked exhausted.
"Something my mother gave me."
Adrian almost laughed from disbelief.
"There is always something else."
"I know."
Nora reached beneath the collar of her uniform and removed a thin chain.
A small brass tube hung from it.
She unscrewed the cap and slid out a tightly rolled letter.
"My mother told me I could open this only if Miss Lily was placed in danger because of the trust."
"She was locked in a cellar."
"I opened it last night."
Adrian's anger sharpened.
"And you waited until now to tell me."
Nora's eyes filled with guilt.
"Because part of it is about you."
She handed him the letter.
Mara Bennett had written it shortly before her death.
The first page described Evelyn's investigation.
The second described Gideon's role in falsifying trust records.
The third explained Julian's return.
Julian had originally approached Evelyn claiming he wanted to expose Arthur's old fraud and clear his own name.
Evelyn believed him at first.
Then she discovered Julian had begun redirecting some of Arthur's hidden money for himself.
When Evelyn threatened to expose both brothers, Julian gave Gideon a choice.
Help destroy the evidence or be exposed with it.
Gideon chose himself.
Mara's final paragraph was the hardest to read.
Three days before Evelyn's crash, Mara saw Gideon in the estate garage beside Evelyn's car.
He was kneeling near the rear wheel.
Mara confronted him.
Gideon claimed he was checking a leak.
After Evelyn died, Mara told Julian what she had seen.
Julian told her to stay silent.
Not because he believed Gideon innocent.
Because he wanted to use the knowledge to control him.
Adrian lowered the page.
"Julian knew."
Nora nodded.
"He may not have cut the brake line, but he protected the man who did."
Martin's face looked carved from stone.
Gideon was his half-brother, but there was no defense left to offer.
Adrian read the last lines.
If Adrian ever learns this, tell him Evelyn did not hide the truth because she doubted him.
She hid it because Arthur trained his sons to fight each other before they learned how to trust each other.
Tell Adrian that Lily must never become another weapon in that war.
Adrian sat down.
For the first time since the grand hall confrontation, anger gave way to grief.
He had spent years thinking Evelyn kept secrets because she did not trust him.
The truth was more painful.
She had been trying to spare him from a family war that outlived her.
A clock struck eleven.
Midnight was one hour away.
Celeste entered under police supervision.
"Julian will not wait if we are late."
Adrian folded Mara's letter and stood.
"We are not bringing Lily's rabbit."
Celeste shook her head.
"Then he will know it's a trap."
Adrian looked toward the staircase where his daughter slept.
"It is a trap."
"And if he knows?"
May you like
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Then I want him angry enough to stop hiding."
