Chapter 13: Foundations

Back home, the foundation expanded faster than expected.
What had started as a quiet initiative became a national movement.
Legal teams volunteered.
Donors came forward.
Stories surfaced—painful, complicated, powerful.
Clara read every single one.
Not because she had to.
Because she refused to forget what silence felt like.
Julian visited three weeks later.
Not for her.
At least, not officially.
He had been hired to restore the original wing of the vineyard—the part Clara had left untouched, preserved as it was on the day everything changed.
“You never repaired it,” he observed.
“No,” Clara said. “Some things shouldn’t be erased.”
Julian walked slowly through the space, running his hand along the marble.
“They don’t have to be erased,” he said. “They can be…reframed.”
Clara crossed her arms. “That sounds like a luxury perspective.”
He shook his head. “No. It’s survival.”
They stood in silence.
Then he pointed to the mark in the floor—the one beneath the gold plaque.
“What if this isn’t where it ended?” he asked.
Clara frowned. “It is.”
Julian met her gaze. “What if it’s where it began?”
Something in her chest shifted.
Not pain.
Not anger.
May you like
Something quieter.
Possibility.
