CHAPTER 7: THE ROOM BENEATH THE VINEYARD

At sunrise, Clara walked through the vineyard in her ruined wedding gown.

She had refused to change.

Not because she wanted to preserve the moment.

Because she wanted to remember exactly how the illusion had ended.

Naomi walked beside her. Two security officers followed.

Andrew remained inside the hotel under the supervision of investigators.

Clara’s father’s letter contained a sequence of numbers. Naomi recognized them as coordinates leading to an abandoned stone storage building at the northern edge of the estate.

The building had not been used in decades.

Inside, they found a rusted wine rack bolted to the floor.

Behind it was a steel door.

The numbers from the letter opened the lock.

A narrow staircase descended beneath the vineyard.

At the bottom stood a climate-controlled archive room filled with financial ledgers, recorded interviews, ownership documents, and photographs.

Clara’s father had known Arthur Whitlock was embezzling money years ago.

He had also known Daniel Ross was helping him.

But before he could expose them, Clara’s father died from what doctors called a sudden heart condition.

Naomi examined a medical file.

“Clara…”

Inside was a toxicology report prepared privately after his death.

It identified a chemical that should not have been in his bloodstream.

Clara gripped the table.

“My father was poisoned.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Naomi steadied her.

The evidence suggested Daniel had introduced the substance through medication Clara’s father took regularly.

Arthur funded the operation.

Together, they had removed the only man capable of exposing their offshore network.

Clara’s grief had never fully healed.

Now it changed shape.

It became rage.

A phone rang somewhere in the archive room.

Clara and Naomi froze.

The sound came from an old desk.

A landline phone sat beneath a layer of dust.

It rang again.

Clara answered.

Arthur Whitlock’s voice came through the receiver.

“Your father built that room for you.”

Clara’s grip tightened.

“How are you calling me?”

“Money buys privileges, even in custody.”

“What did you do to my father?”

Arthur ignored the question.

“Daniel believes the evidence in that room can destroy us. He is correct.”

“You are already finished.”

“No, Clara. Men like Daniel always prepare exits.”

“What exit?”

Arthur laughed softly.

“Your father made one mistake. He thought Daniel wanted money.”

“What did he want?”

“You.”

The line went dead.

Naomi immediately called security.

Then the archive lights shut off.

Emergency lights flickered red.

A mechanical alarm sounded overhead.

Clara smelled smoke.

The steel door at the top of the stairs slammed shut.

Someone had activated the room’s fire suppression system.

But instead of water, a thick gas began pouring from the ceiling vents.

Naomi covered her mouth.

The security officers rushed toward the stairs.

Clara looked through the red haze at the shelves containing the proof of her father’s murder.

Then she noticed a small blinking device beneath the desk.

A timer.

May you like

Thirty seconds remained.

And Daniel Ross was no longer in federal custody.
