Chapter 14: The Choice

The past returned without warning.

A legal request.

Andrew Whitlock was eligible for early parole.

Clara read the notice once.

Then again.

Naomi watched her carefully. “Do you want to respond?”

Clara set the paper down.

A year ago, the question would have carried weight.

Now, it felt…distant.

“I already did,” she said.

Naomi frowned. “When?”

Clara looked toward the vineyard.

“When I chose not to look back.”

She didn’t attend the hearing.

She didn’t send a statement.

She didn’t need to.

That chapter had already been written—and closed.

That evening, she walked through the restored wing.

Julian had kept his promise.

Nothing was erased.

But everything felt different.

The light fell softer.

The space breathed again.

“You were right,” Clara admitted.

Julian glanced at her. “About?”

“Not everything broken needs to be hidden.”

He smiled. “Some things just need the right frame.”

Clara looked around.

For the first time, the past didn’t feel like a weight.

It felt like a foundation.

And foundations weren’t meant to trap you.

They were meant to hold you steady while you built something stronger.
