CHAPTER 6: THE OTHER WHITLOCK SON

The jet had not taken off.

Clara’s security team had closed the runway before the aircraft reached its departure point.

Within minutes, the private airfield was surrounded.

Arthur Whitlock, Daniel Ross, and the unidentified young man were taken into custody.

But the damage inside the reception hall had already been done.

Andrew stared at the image on the tablet.

The stranger had his eyes.

His height.

Even the same slight tilt of the head.

“Who is he?” Andrew asked.

Patricia sat down slowly.

No one answered.

Andrew stepped closer to her.

“Mother.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“His name is Adrian.”

“Who is Adrian?”

“Your half brother.”

The truth came apart in pieces.

Years before Arthur married Patricia, he had been involved with a woman named Lydia Grant. She became pregnant, but Arthur’s father refused to accept a child born outside the Whitlock social circle.

Arthur chose the company.

Lydia disappeared from his life.

But Arthur secretly supported their son and eventually trained him to take control of the family empire.

Andrew had never been the heir.

He had been the public face.

The obedient son.

The disposable one.

“Arthur planned to replace you after the Mason assets were secured,” Patricia admitted.

Andrew’s expression emptied.

“You knew I was disposable.”

“I was trying to protect your position.”

“By helping him?”

“By making you useful enough that he could not remove you.”

Evelyn covered her mouth, horrified.

Andrew looked at Clara.

Every excuse he might have offered died before it reached his lips.

He had betrayed Clara to earn the approval of a father who had abandoned him and a mother who had used him.

Clara did not comfort him.

Pain did not erase responsibility.

The investigators escorted Patricia from the room.

She resisted only when they reached the ruined gown lying beyond the doors.

Her gaze fell on the delicate white lace she had destroyed.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that a single act of cruelty had exposed everything.

“This is your fault,” she hissed at Clara.

Clara met her eyes.

“No. I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own choices.”

Patricia was taken away.

The shareholders began signing emergency resolutions. Andrew was suspended from every executive role. Evelyn surrendered her phone and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

By midnight, the wedding guests had gone.

Only Clara, Andrew, Naomi, and the venue staff remained.

Andrew stood alone beneath the floral arch.

“Was any of it real?” he asked.

Clara looked at him.

“My love was.”

He closed his eyes.

“That makes it worse.”

“Yes.”

He glanced toward the altar.

“I will confess to everything.”

“You should.”

“And I will return every dollar connected to the scheme.”

“You should.”

He gave a broken nod.

Then he took an envelope from inside his jacket.

“I found this in my mother’s safe yesterday.”

Clara accepted it.

The envelope was addressed to her in her late father’s handwriting.

Her father had been dead for nine years.

With trembling fingers, Clara opened it.

Inside was a single page.

At the bottom were the words:

CLARA, IF ARTHUR WHITLOCK IS ALIVE, DO NOT TRUST DANIEL.

BENEATH THE VINEYARD IS THE PROOF.
