Chapter 1: The Envelope

Renata didn’t rush.

That was the first thing Alonso noticed.

She didn’t run to the bathroom like a humiliated wife. She didn’t cry. She didn’t look back.

She walked.

Steady. Controlled. Precise.

The private lounge door closed behind her with a soft click that somehow echoed louder than the crash of the plate.

Inside, laughter slowly tried to recover—but something had shifted.

Alonso’s hand moved instinctively to his jacket pocket.

The envelope.

Still there.

But now it felt heavier.

In the hallway, Renata paused under the warm golden lights. Her reflection stared back at her in a polished mirror—dress stained, hair slightly undone, cheek still flushed.

For a moment, she simply breathed.

Then she reached into her handbag.

Her phone lit up.

Three missed calls. One message.

“We’re ready. Say the word.”

Renata typed back only two words.

“It’s time.”

Back inside, Evangelina raised her glass again, forcing the room back into celebration.

“To family,” she repeated, louder this time.

But Alonso wasn’t listening anymore.
