Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,
casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.
Luca Cafalli stood alone at the end of the long table, listening to the last elevator hum fade beyond the private foyer of his Manhattan penthouse.
He had come home three hours earlier than expected, and no one in the apartment had been warned.
The city glittered beyond the glass walls, but the penthouse itself felt strangely abandoned.
Then he heard a baby's weak cough from the living room.
Luca's expression hardened instantly.
There was no baby in his household.
He crossed the dark hallway and stopped so suddenly that the heel of his shoe scraped the marble.
Emily Hart, the quiet maid who had worked for him for seven months, was lying on the glossy floor beside the sofa.
Her blonde hair had fallen loose from its neat bun, and her black-and-white uniform was wrinkled as if she had been hiding there for hours.
A pale infant rested against her chest beneath a white blanket.
Emily looked up at Luca as though she had just seen an executioner.
"What are you doing down there?"
She tightened both arms around the child.
"Mr. Cafalli, please don't hurt him."
Luca stared at her.
"Why would I hurt a baby?"
"He was sick."
Her voice broke on the last word.
Luca crouched beside her and reached toward the infant.
Emily flinched so violently that he stopped.
"I am checking his temperature."
After a long second, she allowed him closer.
The baby's forehead was hot.
Luca's anger vanished beneath a cold wave of concern.
"How long has he had a fever?"
"Since this afternoon."
"Then why isn't he in a hospital?"
Emily looked toward the windows instead of answering.
Luca followed her gaze and saw nothing but towers, traffic, and the black reflection of his own apartment.
Then Emily seized his wrist with both hands.
"They're watching my home."
Luca did not move.
"Who?"
"Men I don't know."
"That is not an answer."
Tears gathered in her eyes.
"They have a scorpion tattoo."
For the first time that night, Luca looked frightened.
He covered it quickly, but Emily saw it.
"You know what that means."
Luca slowly stood.
He adjusted the front of his black suit jacket while his mind raced through names he had spent ten years trying to bury.
"You're staying here."
Emily shook her head.
"No, you don't understand."
"I understand enough."
He walked to the wall panel beside the fireplace and locked the penthouse elevators with a private code.
Then he called building security.
No one answered.
Luca tried again.
Silence.
His eyes narrowed.
"Emily, when did you enter the building?"
"About forty minutes ago."
"Did anyone see you?"
"The night doorman did."
"Which one?"
"Mr. Bell."
Luca's face became unreadable.
Mr. Bell had been fired two weeks earlier.
He walked to the security monitor behind the bar and activated the lobby feed.
The screen showed an empty desk.
Then the image glitched.
For half a second, a man in a gray coat appeared directly beneath the lobby camera.
His sleeve pulled back as he lifted his phone.
A black scorpion was tattooed around his wrist.
Emily gasped.
Luca reached for the phone to call the police.
Before he could dial, the private elevator chimed.

The doors at the far end of the foyer began to open.
And Luca knew he had locked them thirty seconds earlier.
