Chapter 14 - The Last Scorpion.

Luca, Emily, and Cross reached Brooklyn before dawn.
The red door stood open.
Inside, furniture had been overturned and medical supplies were scattered across the floor.
Emily ran toward the back room.
The portable crib was empty.
"Noah!"
No answer came.
Dr. Pierce was missing too.
Cross checked the building cameras.
Most had been destroyed.
One rear camera survived.
The footage showed Dr. Pierce carrying Noah into a dark SUV twenty minutes earlier.
No one forced him.
Emily stared at the screen.
"He took him willingly."
Luca remembered every private doctor visit, every family emergency, and every confidential conversation Pierce had handled.
"He was the leak before Marcus."
Cross immediately issued an alert.
Then Margaret entered from the basement with blood on her sleeve from a shallow cut.
"Pierce said Victoria had a second escape plan."
"Where?" Emily demanded.
"The old Cafalli airfield in New Jersey."
Thomas drove faster than Luca had ever seen him drive.
At the private airfield, a small jet waited with its engines running.
Dr. Pierce stood near the stairs holding Noah.
Two armed men guarded him.
Luca stepped from the car alone.
"Aaron."
Pierce looked ashamed.
"I didn't want this."
"Then hand him over."
"Victoria promised my family would be protected."
"Victoria is in federal custody."
Pierce's face changed.
The guards looked at each other.
Cross's vehicles appeared behind the hangars.
Pierce realized the Circle had already collapsed around him.
Emily stepped forward.
"He trusted you."
Pierce looked down at Noah.
The baby was awake but calm.
"I did keep him alive."
"Then do one more decent thing."
Pierce walked slowly toward Emily.
One of the guards raised his weapon.
Thomas drove the sedan between them, blocking the line of sight.
Federal agents surrounded the hangar seconds later.
The guards surrendered.
Pierce placed Noah in Emily's arms.
She held the child and sobbed into his blanket.
Luca touched Noah's tiny hand.
The infant closed his fingers around one of Luca's.
Cross arrested Pierce.
The sun was beginning to rise when Luca's phone rang.
It was Naomi.
"Victoria's lawyers filed an emergency petition."
"For what?"
"They claim Noah is not Gabriel's descendant."
Emily stared at him.
Naomi continued.
"If they can invalidate his bloodline, the trust clause disappears."
Luca looked toward Margaret.
"Can they?"
Margaret went silent.
Her silence was worse than an answer.
"Margaret?"
May you like
She finally spoke.
"There is something I never told Emily about Sophie's father."
