Chapter 15 - The Name on the Birth Certificate.

They returned to Manhattan with Noah surrounded by federal protection.
By noon, Victoria's arrest dominated every major news channel in the city.
The same reporters who had called Emily a kidnapper now waited outside the federal courthouse asking whether she was a hero.
Emily refused to speak to them.
She cared about only one question.
Was Noah truly Gabriel Cafalli's descendant?
Margaret gathered Luca, Emily, Naomi, and Cross inside a private conference room.
"Ava had Gabriel's daughter after his death," Margaret said.
"That part is true."
"Sophie was his biological child."
Emily exhaled.
"Then what are you hiding?"
Margaret placed an old birth certificate on the table.
"Sophie's legal identity was changed for protection."
"So?"
"When Sophie had Noah, she used the protected name."
Naomi understood immediately.
"The paper trail does not connect them."
Victoria's lawyers were not arguing biology.
They were exploiting the false identities Margaret had created to keep her family alive.
Without proof linking Sophie to Gabriel, the trust could be frozen for years.
Luca looked at Emily.
"Can DNA establish it?"
Cross nodded.
"Yes."
A court-supervised test was ordered.
The waiting was worse than the chase.
For two days, Emily barely left Noah's side.
Luca moved them into the penthouse again, but the apartment no longer felt like an employer's home and a maid's workplace.
He personally removed Emily's old uniform from the staff closet and placed it in a box.
"What are you doing?"
"You are not working here anymore."
Emily stared at him.
"Are you firing me?"
"I am refusing to let the guardian of my family wash my coffee cups."
For the first time in days, she laughed.
Noah's fever disappeared completely that night.
On the third morning, Naomi arrived with the sealed DNA report.
Emily could not open it.
Luca did.
The result confirmed that Noah belonged to Gabriel's bloodline.
The trust activated immediately.
Victoria lost every voting right connected to the Cafalli family trust under the misconduct clause.
Marcus Vale accepted a plea agreement and gave federal investigators financial records tying the Scorpion Circle to years of intimidation and fraud.
Dr. Pierce also cooperated.
The Circle began collapsing company by company.
Weeks later, Emily stood beside the same floor-to-ceiling windows where Luca had first found her hiding with Noah.
The city lights glowed beneath them.
"I thought you were going to take him from me that night," she admitted.
Luca looked at the child sleeping peacefully in her arms.
"I thought you had broken into my home with someone else's baby."
"Technically, I did."
"Technically, you were terrible at being a maid."
Emily looked offended.
"Your apartment was spotless."
"Because you were investigating me while cleaning it."
She smiled.
Then her expression softened.
"What happens to Noah now?"
Luca looked at the legal documents on the table.
"You remain his guardian."
"And the company shares?"
"Held in trust until he is old enough to decide what he wants."
"And you?"
Luca looked out over Manhattan.
"I spend the rest of my life making sure the name Cafalli means something different when he grows up."
Emily nodded slowly.
A quiet knock came from the foyer.
Both of them froze out of habit.
Luca checked the camera before opening the door.
Thomas stood outside holding a small package Antonio Cafalli had left in a bank vault years earlier.
Inside was one final letter.
Luca unfolded it.
There were only two lines.
IF A HART BRINGS THE CHILD HOME, THE WAR IS OVER.
DO NOT MAKE HER A SERVANT AGAIN.
Emily read the words over his shoulder.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Noah woke and reached toward Luca.
Luca took him carefully.
The baby rested against his chest without fear.
Outside, Manhattan moved beneath the morning sun.
May you like
Inside the penthouse, the last symbol of the Scorpion Circle had been removed from the security system.
And for the first time in generations, the Cafalli home was protected not by fear, but by the truth.
