Chapter 3 - Behind the Marble Wall.

The hidden passage smelled of dust, cedar, and old metal.
Emily stepped inside with the baby while Luca sealed the wall behind them.
The pounding at the penthouse door became distant but did not stop.
"Where does this go?"
"Somewhere my father told me never to use."
"That's comforting."
Despite the fear in her voice, Luca almost smiled.
The passage descended behind the walls through a narrow private staircase.
Small emergency lights flickered on as they moved.
Emily held the infant against her shoulder, whispering to him every few seconds.
"His name is Noah."
Luca looked back.
"You never told me."
"You never asked."
"Is he your son?"
Emily's answer came too slowly.
"He is my family."
Luca stopped on the landing.
"That is not what I asked."
"Then stop asking questions I cannot safely answer."
His expression chilled.
"You are in a hidden corridor inside my home while armed impostors are outside."
"And if I tell you everything too soon, Noah may die."
That silenced him.
At the bottom of the stairs stood a steel door with no handle.
Luca held the brass key against a narrow slot.
A green light appeared.
The door unlocked.
He stared at the key in disbelief.
"My father built this room."
Inside was a windowless office untouched for years.
Dust covered a mahogany desk, a leather chair, and shelves filled with old financial binders.
A faded American flag stood in one corner.
On the wall hung a photograph of Antonio Cafalli shaking hands with a federal prosecutor.
Emily stepped closer.
"Your father worked with the government?"
"My father worked with anyone who helped him win."
Luca opened the desk drawers.
Most were empty.
The bottom drawer contained a steel lockbox.
The brass key fit perfectly.
Inside was a black ledger, a cassette-sized digital recorder, and an envelope marked FOR LUCA ONLY.
Luca reached for the envelope.
Emily grabbed his arm.
"Wait."
"For what?"
"Look at the ledger."
Several names had been written on the first page beneath a hand-drawn scorpion symbol.
Luca recognized politicians, contractors, security executives, and men his father had once called friends.
Then he saw a name that made him look at Emily.
MARGARET HART.
Emily's mouth opened slightly.
"That's my mother."
Beside Margaret's name was a handwritten note.
WITNESS - PROTECTED BY A.C.
Luca looked again.
"My father protected your mother."
Emily shook her head.
"My mother told me Antonio Cafalli destroyed our family."
"Then one of them lied."
A faint electronic tone sounded inside the room.
Luca found an old security console beneath the desk.
One red light was blinking.
The hidden passage had been opened from above.
"They found the entrance."
Emily clutched Noah tighter.
Luca took the digital recorder and shoved the ledger beneath his jacket.
"There has to be another exit."
They searched the room.
Emily noticed scratches beneath a bookshelf.
Together they pushed it aside and revealed a narrow service tunnel.
Heavy footsteps echoed from the staircase behind them.
Luca guided Emily into the tunnel first.
As he followed, a voice sounded through the steel door.
"Mr. Cafalli, you are making this harder than it needs to be."
Luca recognized the voice.
It belonged to Marcus Vale, the head of his personal security team.
The man Luca had trusted with every key, every schedule, and every secret for six years.

"Give us the child," Marcus called calmly.
"And no one else has to disappear tonight."
