Chapter 13 - The Last Order.

Emma was discharged at 10:15 a.m.

The paperwork was ordinary.

That felt extraordinary.

No private guard stood outside.

No one told her where she could go.

No one asked her to sign a proxy.

She dressed slowly.

Claire folded the hospital blanket at the foot of the bed out of habit.

Emma noticed.

"You know they wash those."

"I know."

"You don't have to make the bed."

"I know."

Emma smiled.

It was the first relaxed smile Claire had seen in two days.

Then the door opened.

Gerard Pike entered with Reyes.

Pike held one final document.

"I need you to see this before you leave."

Claire immediately disliked the sentence.

Pike handed the page to Emma.

It was an electronic physician order.

Timestamped 9:58 a.m.

Seventeen minutes earlier.

TRANSFER TO VALE BEHAVIORAL CENTER PENDING FAMILY CONSENT.

Emma stared at it.

"Again?"

Pike shook his head.

"It never entered the active system."

"Who created it?"

"Dr. Mercer."

Claire looked at Reyes.

"I thought he was detained at the airport."

"He was questioned."

Reyes's jaw tightened.

"His medical access should have been suspended."

Pike looked ashamed.

"It wasn't processed correctly."

Claire almost laughed.

The hospital had nearly allowed a doctor under investigation to issue another transfer order because someone had failed to check a box.

Emma did laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because the absurdity had become too large for fear.

"This is what almost beat me?"

Pike looked confused.

Emma held up the page.

"Bad people and bad passwords?"

Nobody answered.

Reyes took the order.

"It helps establish continuing intent."

Pike nodded.

"We've now disabled Mercer's access completely."

Claire looked at him.

"Now?"

He accepted the criticism.

"Now."

Outside the hospital, cameras waited.

Claire suggested a private exit.

Emma refused.

"I walked in through the front."

Claire studied her.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

So they walked out through the main lobby.

Emma wore jeans, sneakers, and Claire's Navy sweatshirt.

Claire remained in uniform.

The contrast drew every camera.

Reporters shouted.

"Emma, were you held against your will?"

"Admiral Bennett, did you threaten hospital staff?"

"Is Eleanor Vale under arrest?"

"Was the patient drugged?"

Emma stopped.

Claire did not.

For one terrifying second, Claire thought her daughter would answer them.

Instead, Emma turned to the hospital entrance.

Mara stood just inside.

Emma lifted one hand.

Mara lifted hers.

Then Emma continued walking.

No statement.

No spectacle.

Just exit.

At the curb, Adrian waited alone.

Claire stopped.

Emma did too.

Adrian held the engagement ring.

"I wasn't going to follow you."

Emma said nothing.

"I just wanted to return this properly."

He held it out.

Emma did not take it.

"Keep it."

Adrian lowered his hand.

"Why?"

"So you remember what silence cost."

His face broke.

Emma got into Claire's car.

As Claire walked around to the driver's side, Adrian called after her.

"Admiral."

Claire turned.

"My father found one more file."

Claire looked at him.

"What kind of file?"

Adrian swallowed.

"The original merger valuation."

May you like

Claire went still.

"It says Emma's shares were worth almost three times what they told her."
