Chapter 9 - The Recording.

The cloud folder was called WEDDING ADMIN.

That name made Emma laugh.

It was not amusement.

It was disbelief.

Inside were catering invoices, guest lists, flower estimates, and venue contracts.

Buried among them was a folder marked PRIVATE.

Adrian gave Detective Alvarez written consent to access his account.

There were six audio files.

The first sounded harmless.

Eleanor discussing seating arrangements.

The second contained an argument with a florist.

The third changed everything.

Dr. Mercer spoke first.

"If she refuses, I can only act on clinical grounds."

Eleanor answered.

"Then find clinical grounds."

A chair scraped in the background.

Adrian's voice followed.

"Mom, that's not what we discussed."

Eleanor replied, "What we discussed was protecting the merger."

Claire watched Emma's face.

Emma did not move.

The recording continued.

Mercer said, "A short observation is one thing."

Eleanor answered, "I need twenty-four hours."

"For what?"

"Enough time to establish incapacity and complete the proxy."

Adrian said, "She'll never sign if she thinks it's about the shares."

Eleanor laughed softly.

"Then don't tell her."

The file ended.

Nobody in the room spoke.

Reyes was the first to move.

She took a slow breath.

"That is not ambiguous."

Pike looked ill.

Alvarez asked Adrian when the recording had been made.

"Three nights ago."

"Why was it recorded?"

Adrian stared at the floor.

"My phone automatically records meetings when I use the transcription app."

"Did you know this file existed?"

"No."

Emma finally looked at him.

"But you were there."

Adrian nodded.

That was worse.

The recording had not revealed a secret to him.

It had revealed his silence to everyone else.

Emma left the conference room.

Claire followed her to the empty chapel at the end of the hall.

Emma sat in the back row.

"I keep waiting to feel relieved."

Claire sat beside her.

"You don't have to."

"I thought if I proved I wasn't imagining it, I'd feel better."

"You proved it."

"I feel worse."

Claire looked at the small stained-glass window.

"Because now you know exactly who failed you."

Emma wiped her face.

"I loved him."

Claire did not say anything.

"I think part of me still does."

"That doesn't make what happened acceptable."

"I know."

Emma looked at her mother.

"Why do people think love means you have to become stupid?"

Claire almost smiled.

"Because sometimes people benefit when you confuse forgiveness with permission."

Emma leaned back.

"Are you going to tell me to leave him?"

"No."

Emma looked surprised.

Claire continued.

"I'm going to tell you that nobody gets to make the decision for you."

The words settled between them.

That was the center of everything.

Not the shares.

Not the hospital.

Not Eleanor.

Choice.

When they returned, Alvarez had listened to the remaining recordings.

One included Eleanor discussing the planned transfer.

Another referenced a board vote.

The final file was only eleven seconds long.

Mercer's voice.

"She woke up earlier than expected."

Then Eleanor.

"Then increase the dose."

Claire's stomach turned.

Mara, the nurse, spoke immediately.

"That wasn't done."

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

"I refused the second medication request because her vitals didn't justify it."

Reyes asked, "Who ordered it?"

"Dr. Mercer."

Emma stared at Mara.

"You stopped it?"

Mara nodded.

"I didn't know why he wanted it."

She looked ashamed.

"I just knew it wasn't right."

Alvarez's phone rang.

She answered.

Then her face hardened.

"Where?"

She looked at Claire.

"Mercer was found at the airport."

Emma stood.

"Is he leaving?"

Alvarez put the phone away.

"He was trying to."

May you like

Then she turned to Eleanor.

"And he had a one-way ticket purchased with a Vale Foundation corporate card."
