Chapter 2 - The Woman in Burgundy.

Claire had known that money was involved the moment Eleanor stopped pretending to care about Emma's health.
She just had not expected the amount.
Emma's grandfather, Robert Bennett, had founded a medical logistics company decades earlier.
When he died, he left Emma a minority block of voting shares that would become fully hers at twenty-three.
Her birthday was six weeks away.
Until that moment, Claire had treated the inheritance as a future inconvenience.
Now it looked like a motive.
The hospital administrator introduced himself as Gerard Pike.
He was a polished man in his late fifties with silver glasses and a carefully neutral voice.
"Admiral Bennett, I understand there is concern regarding your daughter's status."
"There is no concern."
Claire kept Emma's hand in hers.
"There is a question."
Pike hesitated.
"What question?"
"Is she free to leave?"
Eleanor answered before he could.
"No."
Claire did not look at her.
"I asked the hospital."
Pike cleared his throat.
"Ms. Bennett was placed on an emergency behavioral hold."
Emma shook her head.
"I came here because I fainted."
"After an emotionally volatile incident."
Eleanor folded her arms.
"She became irrational during our engagement dinner."
Adrian's face tightened.
Claire noticed.
"What happened at the dinner?"
Emma looked at Adrian.
He said nothing.
Eleanor answered again.
"She became overwhelmed."
Emma laughed once.
It was a broken sound.
"I found a contract in her study."
Eleanor's expression sharpened.
"It was a draft."
"It gave you voting authority over my shares."
"It was part of normal family planning."
"You told me it was a marriage document."
Adrian shut his eyes.
Claire turned toward him.
"Is that true?"
He looked at Emma.
Then at his mother.
"I didn't read the final version."
Emma recoiled as if he had struck her.
"You handed it to me."
"I know."
"You told me to sign it."
"I know."
Eleanor stepped between them.
"This is exactly why she needs rest."
Claire's voice lowered.
"Move."
Eleanor froze.
Claire did not shout.
She simply looked at her until Eleanor stepped aside.
The federal medical liaison arrived ten minutes later with Navy Lieutenant Commander Sofia Reyes, a judge advocate Claire knew by reputation but had never met.
Reyes wore civilian clothes and carried herself like someone who preferred facts to drama.
She asked Pike for the hold paperwork.
Pike requested privacy.
Reyes refused.
"We can review it in front of Ms. Bennett unless she asks us to leave."
Emma shook her head.
"I want my mother here."
The document arrived electronically.
Reyes read it once.
Then again.
Claire watched her expression change.
"What is it?"
Reyes pointed to the signature.
"Ms. Bennett's consent to voluntary admission."
Emma stared at the screen.
"That's not mine."
Pike leaned forward.
"Her chart indicates she signed at 11:42 p.m."
Emma's face drained of color.
"I was asleep."
Eleanor's voice became suddenly gentle.
"Emma, medication can affect memory."
Claire looked at the signature.
She had seen Emma sign birthday cards, rent forms, passport documents, and a thousand lazy notes on the refrigerator.
The name on the form was careful.
Too careful.
Emma's real signature leaned sharply to the right.
This one did not.
Reyes asked, "Who witnessed it?"
Pike scrolled.
No one spoke.
Then he stopped.
The witness line carried a familiar name.
Adrian Vale.
Emma looked at him.
Adrian stepped backward.
Claire felt the entire room tilt toward him.
"You witnessed her signature?"
His lips parted.
Eleanor turned.
"Adrian."
It was only his name.
But it sounded like a warning.
Adrian looked at Emma.
"I never saw you sign that."
Eleanor's face went rigid.
Pike whispered, "Mr. Vale, your electronic authentication is attached."
Adrian stared at the screen.
"Then someone used my access."
Claire looked at Eleanor.
The older woman's hand had moved toward her burgundy handbag.
Not inside it.
Just closer.
Claire noticed that too.
Then Emma whispered, "Check the second page."
Reyes scrolled.
A financial authorization was attached to the medical intake.
May you like
It granted a temporary proxy over Emma's trust-related decisions.
The named proxy was Eleanor Vale.
