Chapter 5 - The Missing Consent.

By late afternoon, the hospital room had become an evidence room with flowers.

Every document seemed to reveal another reason Emma had been kept quiet.

The proposed merger valued Bennett Medical Transport at nearly half what an independent appraisal had estimated the previous year.

If approved, Mercy General's affiliated investment group would gain control of distribution contracts across five states.

The Vale Family Foundation held an indirect interest in that group.

Eleanor would benefit.

So would Gerard Pike.

So would several hospital board members.

Emma stared at the numbers as Reyes explained them.

"I didn't even know I could vote on any of this yet."

"You couldn't."

Claire looked at the date.

"Not until your twenty-third birthday."

Reyes nodded.

"Unless a valid proxy was created in advance."

The room went silent.

Emma wrapped the blanket tighter around herself.

"So they needed me to sign before my birthday."

"They needed your consent."

Reyes looked at the voluntary admission form.

"Or something that looked like it."

Adrian appeared in the doorway.

He looked worse than before.

Claire nearly told him to leave.

Emma stopped her.

"Let him talk."

Adrian stepped inside.

"I found something."

He held out his phone.

Eleanor had sent him messages over the previous two weeks.

Most were ordinary.

Then the tone changed.

Make sure Emma brings identification.

Do not let her leave before the documents are complete.

If she resists, Nathan will handle it.

Claire read the last line again.

"Nathan."

Emma whispered, "Dr. Mercer."

Adrian nodded.

"My mother has known him for years."

Claire looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell us this earlier?"

He swallowed.

"Because I was scared."

Emma's face hardened.

"Of her?"

"Of what she would do."

"She did it to me instead."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"No."

Emma's voice shook.

"You don't get to say that like knowing makes it smaller."

Adrian flinched.

Claire watched her daughter straighten.

Fear was still there.

But now anger stood beside it.

Adrian unlocked another message.

Eleanor had written at 10:06 p.m., shortly before Emma collapsed.

If she refuses the proxy, we proceed with Plan B.

There was no explanation of Plan B.

Detective Alvarez took photographs of the messages.

"Do not delete anything."

Adrian nodded.

"There's more."

He showed her an email draft he had found on a shared family tablet.

It was addressed to the hospital board chair.

Subject: Temporary Incapacity Documentation.

The draft described Emma as suffering from an acute episode that could prevent her from managing financial decisions.

It was dated two days before the engagement dinner.

Emma stopped breathing for a moment.

"They planned it before I even got there."

Claire put a hand on her shoulder.

Reyes looked toward Pike.

"This was not a reaction to a medical emergency."

Pike stared at the floor.

"No."

Everyone turned.

He spoke more quietly.

"It wasn't."

The admission landed like a dropped glass.

Alvarez stepped closer.

"Mr. Pike, choose your next words carefully."

Pike looked at Emma.

"I was told the family expected a difficult evening."

"By whom?"

He hesitated.

Then he said it.

"Eleanor Vale."

Claire's voice became flat.

"And what were you supposed to do?"

Pike closed his eyes.

"Make sure Ms. Bennett stayed overnight."

Emma looked sick.

Pike continued.

"I was told it was for her safety."

Reyes pointed to the proxy.

"And this?"

Pike shook his head.

"I never approved that."

Alvarez held up the altered chart.

"But your credentials did."

Pike's voice cracked.

"I didn't change it."

A phone rang.

It belonged to Adrian.

He looked at the screen and went still.

"My mother."

Emma stared at him.

"Answer it."

Adrian did.

Eleanor's voice came through before he could speak.

"Do not say another word to them."

May you like

Then she added, colder than before,

"Remember what happens to your father if you do."
