Chapter 1: The Silence After the Slap

The ballroom, once alive with laughter and clinking glasses, fell into a suffocating silence.

Every eye was fixed on them.

The woman in the emerald gown—Elena Voss—stood frozen, her trembling hand still raised midair. The sharp echo of the slap seemed to linger in the chandeliers above.

The waitress—thin, pale, her cheek burning red—did not move. Her lips quivered, but her gaze remained steady.

“Happy birthday… sister.”

The words did not just land.

They shattered something.

Elena’s breath caught violently. “No… that’s not possible,” she whispered, stumbling back a step. Her voice, once commanding, cracked under the weight of disbelief.

But the eyes…

Those eyes.

They were unmistakable.

The same soft brown eyes that used to follow her through sunflower fields. The same eyes that cried the day Elena left home—and never looked back.

“Mara…?” Elena’s voice barely existed now.

A tear slipped down Mara’s face. “You remember.”

The crowd murmured. Confusion turned into curiosity, curiosity into judgment.

And for the first time in years, Elena felt small.
