Chapter 2: Fractures of the Past

Elena fled the ballroom.

The music never resumed.

In a private lounge upstairs, she paced like a woman unraveling, clutching her temples as memories clawed their way back to the surface.

A small village.

A crumbling house.

A stormy night.

“You’re the lucky one,” her mother had whispered, pressing a letter into Elena’s hands. “Go. Don’t look back.”

And she hadn’t.

She never asked what happened to Mara.

Never wrote.

Never returned.

Because survival in her new world demanded forgetting the old one.

A knock came at the door.

Before Elena could respond, it creaked open.

Mara stepped inside.

Still in her uniform.

Still carrying the weight of everything Elena had abandoned.

“You left,” Mara said quietly.

May you like

Elena swallowed hard. “I was sent away. I had no choice.”

Mara let out a soft, broken laugh. “You always had a choice. You just chose a better life… without me.”
