CHAPTER 6: The Visit

Leah refused to stay behind a desk.
Three weeks later, she stood in the middle of a small rural town, dust swirling at her feet as construction crews worked behind her.
This was the first project approved under her direction.
A housing center.
Temporary—but safe.
A place where families wouldn’t have to sleep in cars, or worse.
A woman approached her slowly, holding the hand of a young boy.
“Are you… Leah?” she asked.
Leah nodded.
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“I heard your name,” she said. “They said you’re the reason this is happening.”
Leah shook her head instinctively. “No—it’s a team effort—”
The woman squeezed her hand.
“No,” she whispered. “You don’t understand.”
She gestured toward the half-built structure.
“We were leaving next week,” she said. “We had nowhere to go.”
Her voice cracked.
“My son was going to lose his school. His friends. Everything.”
The boy looked up at Leah, shy but curious.
“Is this really for us?” he asked.
Leah knelt down to his level.
“Yes,” she said softly. “It is.”
The boy smiled.
And something inside Leah shifted.
Not pride.
Not satisfaction.
Something deeper.
Purpose.
That night, back in her modest hotel room, Leah didn’t touch the luxury suite the foundation had booked.
Instead, she sat by the window, looking out at the quiet town.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Nathan:
“You changed lives today.”
Leah stared at the screen for a long moment.
May you like
Then she typed back:
“They changed mine first.”
