CHAPTER 7: The Return of Vanessa

Scandals don’t disappear.

They wait.

And then they come back—quieter, sharper, more dangerous.

Leah was leaving a community center in Chicago when she saw her.

Vanessa Brooks.

Standing across the street.

Watching.

Gone were the designer gowns, the perfectly styled hair, the effortless confidence.

Vanessa looked… different.

Thinner. Tired.

Real.

Leah hesitated, then crossed the street.

Vanessa didn’t move.

“I didn’t think you’d come over,” Vanessa said, her voice flat.

“I didn’t think you’d be here,” Leah replied.

A beat of silence.

Then Vanessa laughed softly.

“Yeah,” she said. “Neither did I.”

Leah studied her.

“You disappeared.”

Vanessa shrugged.

“People disappear when they’re no longer useful,” she said. “I just learned that the hard way.”

Leah didn’t respond.

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

“I was awful to you,” she said suddenly.

No defensiveness. No excuses.

Just truth.

Leah nodded slowly. “You were.”

Another pause.

“I thought status made me important,” Vanessa continued. “That if I stayed on top, I’d never lose anything.”

Her eyes lifted—tired, but honest.

“I lost everything anyway.”

Leah exhaled quietly.

“That’s not entirely true,” she said.

Vanessa frowned. “What do you mean?”

“You still have a choice,” Leah said.

Vanessa blinked.

“A choice?”

Leah nodded.

“To decide who you are now.”

The words hung between them.

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain—not defeated, but… open.

“What if it’s too late?” she asked.

Leah shook her head.

“It’s only too late if you stop trying.”

Vanessa stared at her.

Then, slowly, she nodded.

Not a promise.

Not a transformation.

But a beginning.

As Leah walked away, she didn’t look back.

Because some stories aren’t about revenge.

They’re about what happens after.
