Chapter 3: The Price of Silence

“You let her stand here like she was nothing?” a voice from the crowd muttered.

Isabella’s face burned.

“You’re lying,” she said, pointing at Clara. “If you had that kind of power, you would have said something.”

Clara met her gaze calmly.

“I didn’t need to.”

“Then why now?” Isabella demanded.

Clara’s eyes flicked briefly to John.

“Because silence is only a gift,” she said softly, “until someone mistakes it for permission.”

John flinched.

The weight of every moment he had looked away, every time he had chosen comfort over truth, pressed down on him.

“I never meant—”

“No,” Clara cut him off gently. “You just never stopped it.”

That hurt more.

Security approached hesitantly, unsure of who they should be listening to now.

The manager of the venue hurried in next, bowing slightly toward Clara.

“Ms. Reed… how would you like us to proceed?”

The shift was complete.

Power had changed hands in the eyes of everyone present.

Clara glanced around the room—the chandeliers, the guests, the cameras.

Then back at Isabella.

“Continue,” she said simply.

Confusion rippled again.

“What?” Isabella snapped.

Clara’s lips curved faintly.

“I didn’t stop the wedding.”
