Chapter 4: The Breaking Point

The ceremony resumed—but nothing was the same.

Every vow felt hollow.

Every glance carried judgment.

Isabella stood at the altar, her perfect posture cracking under invisible pressure.

When the officiant asked if anyone objected, the silence stretched too long.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

And then—

“I do.”

The voice wasn’t loud.

But it didn’t need to be.

John stepped back.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

Isabella stared at him, horror replacing fury. “What are you doing?”

“I can’t marry you,” he said.

“Because of her?” Isabella laughed, but it sounded broken now.

“No,” John replied. “Because of me.”

He turned to Clara.

“I spent years pretending I didn’t owe you everything,” he said. “And today… I watched someone humiliate you, and I did nothing again.”

Clara’s expression didn’t change.

But something in her eyes softened—just slightly.

“I won’t do it anymore,” John said.

The silence that followed felt final.

Isabella’s glass slipped from her hand, shattering against the marble.
