CHAPTER 1: You Cannot Fire the Owner

The orchestra stopped the moment Claire Ashford entered the ballroom.
More than three hundred guests turned toward the woman standing at the top of the black marble staircase.
Claire wore a simple white gown.
No diamonds.
No designer handbag.
No security team.
Only her six-year-old son, Noah, holding tightly to her hand.
At the opposite end of the ballroom, Victoria Ashford slowly lowered her champagne glass.
The sixty-seven-year-old matriarch wore a gold silk gown and a necklace worth more than most people’s homes. Her silver-blonde hair was swept into a flawless twist, and her expression carried the confidence of a woman who believed everyone in the room belonged to her.
Including Claire.
Victoria walked through the crowd without hurrying.
“You were not invited,” she said.
Claire looked past her at the giant gold letters above the stage.
ASHFORD CROWN HOLDINGS — FIFTY YEARS OF EXCELLENCE.
“My husband helped build this company,” Claire replied.
“My son is no longer here to defend your lies.”
Noah pressed closer to Claire’s side.
Victoria noticed him and narrowed her eyes.
“You should never have brought the child.”
“His name is Noah.”
“To this family, he is a complication.”
Claire’s jaw tightened.
Three months earlier, Victoria had fired Claire during an emergency board meeting. She accused Claire of mishandling company funds after the sudden loss of Claire’s husband, Daniel Ashford.
Claire had been escorted from headquarters while employees watched.
She had said nothing then.
Tonight, Victoria intended to finish the humiliation.
She turned toward the guests.
“This woman used my family’s grief to gain access to confidential accounts,” Victoria announced. “She was dismissed for misconduct and is no longer connected to Ashford Crown.”
Whispers spread across the ballroom.
Claire felt Noah’s hand trembling.
A security officer approached.
“Ma’am, you need to leave.”
Noah suddenly stepped between them.
“Don’t touch my mom.”
Several guests laughed nervously.
Victoria’s mouth curved into a cold smile.
“Take them out.”
The officer reached for Claire’s arm.
Noah stumbled, and Claire dropped to her knees, wrapping both arms around him. Camera flashes exploded around them.
Victoria stood above Claire like a queen watching a defeated enemy.
“You have nothing left,” she whispered.
Claire slowly looked up.
Tears filled her eyes, but her voice remained steady.
“That is where you are wrong.”
She pulled a phone from her purse and called a number no one else in the family knew.
A man answered immediately.
Claire spoke only four words.
“Activate the founding clause.”
Every light in the ballroom went dark.
A second later, the doors locked.
Then the enormous screen behind Victoria came alive.
A legal document appeared beneath the Ashford Crown logo.
Victoria stared at the first line.
Her champagne glass slipped from her hand.

The document named Claire Ashford as the controlling owner of the company.
And someone had just frozen every Ashford family account.
