CHAPTER 7 : Victoria’s Confession

Claire tracked the video to an abandoned Ashford property outside the city.
Police surrounded the estate, but the building was empty.
Noah’s jacket lay on the floor beside Victoria’s gold shawl.
There was no sign of either of them.
On the dining table sat a recorder.
Claire pressed play.
Victoria’s voice filled the room.
“Claire, if you are hearing this, someone has successfully made you believe I took Noah.”
Claire looked toward Adrian.
The recording continued.
“I followed the boy because Daniel instructed me to protect him. I did not trust you. I believed love made you careless.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Victoria spoke more quietly.
“The theft inside Ashford Crown is real, but it did not begin with me. Your father-in-law built the private surveillance network. Daniel tried to dismantle it.”
Claire stared at the recorder.
“Three days before Daniel vanished, he came to my house carrying a child’s medical file. He told me that if anyone learned the truth about Noah, the boy would become more valuable than the company.”
Claire’s fingers went cold.
“Daniel asked me to keep the file hidden. I agreed. It was the last conversation we ever had.”
A door slammed somewhere upstairs.
Police moved through the house.
Claire listened to the final part.
“If Noah has been taken, find Dr. Evelyn Cross. She delivered him. Do not trust the hospital records.”
The recording ended.
Samuel recognized the name.
Evelyn Cross had been the private physician for the Ashford family. She disappeared from public life five years earlier.
Claire had been told another doctor delivered Noah.
Adrian searched old corporate records and discovered that Dr. Cross still received monthly payments from a shell company.
The payments led to a lakeside nursing facility.
They found Evelyn in a private room under a false name.
She was eighty years old, weak but fully aware.
When Claire showed her Noah’s photograph, Evelyn began crying.
“I prayed Daniel would tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
The doctor looked at Adrian, then asked everyone except Claire to leave.
Once they were alone, Evelyn took Claire’s hand.
“The baby you delivered did not survive the night.”
Claire pulled away.
“No.”
“You were unconscious after the emergency surgery. Daniel refused to let you wake up without a child.”
Claire struggled to breathe.
Evelyn continued.
“Another infant had been brought to the hospital that same evening. No name. No legal documents. Daniel ordered me to exchange the records.”
“Whose baby was Noah?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with fear.
“I never knew the mother.”
“Who brought him?”
The doctor glanced toward the closed door.
“Victoria.”
Before Claire could ask another question, the room lights died.
When emergency power returned, the window was open.
Dr. Evelyn Cross had vanished.
On her pillow lay a photograph of Victoria holding newborn Noah.
Standing beside her was Daniel.
