CHAPTER 19 : The Two Husbands

Claire kept the gun raised between the two men.

The Daniel beside the monitors wore a torn white shirt. His wrists were bruised from restraints.

The Daniel near the elevator wore a black coat and appeared unharmed.

Both had Daniel’s voice.

Both looked at Claire with the same familiar intensity.

“Tell me something only my husband would know,” Claire said.

The man in white answered first.

“On our wedding night, you hid in the hotel kitchen because you were afraid you had made a mistake.”

Claire’s grip tightened.

The man in black responded.

“You were not afraid of marrying me. You were afraid that my family would destroy who you were.”

Both memories were correct.

“Daniel told me both things,” Claire whispered.

The man in black took one step forward.

“We shared information. That was the purpose of the program.”

“Don’t move.”

He stopped.

The man in white pointed toward him.

“His name is Julian Mercer. Charles recruited him after a facial reconstruction program.”

The other man shook his head.

“My birth name was Julian. But Daniel is the identity Charles gave both of us.”

Claire struggled to understand.

“Which one was born Daniel Ashford?”

Neither answered.

The screens changed.

A video showed Charles speaking to two young men nearly twenty years earlier.

They were similar in height but did not yet look identical.

Charles walked between them.

“An heir is a position,” he said. “Not a person.”

The man in white watched with disgust.

“He raised us together. One appeared in public. The other handled dangerous meetings and private negotiations.”

“Who married me?” Claire asked.

The man in black lowered his eyes.

“We both did.”

Claire felt nauseated.

“No.”

“Not knowingly at first,” the man in white said. “Charles exchanged us when security risks increased.”

The forgotten conversations.

The changing handwriting.

The disappearing scar.

All of it had been real.

“You used me.”

“We were controlled,” the man in black said.

“You came into my home. You touched me. You let me believe you were one man.”

“I loved you.”

“You do not get to call that love.”

The man in white reached toward a console.

“We can show you everything.”

“Keep your hands where I can see them.”

A video appeared anyway.

It showed the night of the country house fire.

One Daniel carried a sleeping child from the building.

Another vehicle arrived carrying the second boy.

Charles’s people exchanged the children while smoke covered the security cameras.

The man carrying the child turned toward the camera.

It was the Daniel in black.

Claire looked at him.

“Which boy did you bring home?”

“I thought it was Noah.”

“You thought?”

“The children were already dressed identically.”

The man in white spoke sharply.

“He knew Charles planned the exchange.”

“That is a lie.”

“You took the payment.”

“It funded the operation to rescue both boys.”

The two men moved closer to each other.

Claire raised the gun.

“Stop.”

An alarm began sounding.

The archive screens displayed a live feed from the surface.

Margaret stood beside a vehicle with Elias.

Noah was missing.

Claire spun toward the men.

“Where is my son?”

Neither answered quickly enough.

She fired into the ceiling.

“Where is he?”

The man in black checked the tracking system.

“He returned to the station.”

“Why?”

The feed switched.

Noah walked alone along the railway platform.

He was holding the blue key.

A train approached from the tunnel.

The man in white went pale.

“Charles told him to come back.”

Claire ran toward the elevator.

The man in black followed.

The other Daniel remained at the console.

“Aren’t you coming?” Claire shouted.

He looked at the video of Noah.

“I can stop the train from here.”

The Daniel in black grabbed Claire’s arm.

“He will lock us underground.”

The Daniel in white entered an override command.

The elevator doors began closing.

Claire aimed the gun through the narrowing gap.

“Tell me which one of you is Daniel.”

The man in white looked directly at her.

“Neither of us.”

The doors closed.

As the elevator rose, Claire stared at the man beside her.

“What did he mean?”

The man in black did not answer.

Then Claire noticed blood spreading beneath his coat.

She pulled the fabric aside.

A bullet wound marked his chest.

He had been injured before entering the archive.

“Who shot you?”

“Daniel.”

Claire stepped away.

“You said neither of you was born Daniel.”

“We weren’t.”

“Then who is he?”

The elevator opened onto the station.

Noah stood on the tracks as the approaching train roared toward him.

A man stepped from the opposite tunnel and lifted the child into his arms.

Claire recognized him immediately.

He looked nothing like the two men in the archive.

But he was wearing Daniel’s original wedding watch.

The stranger looked at Claire and said the words her husband had spoken during their private vows.

“Find me in every life.”

May you like

Then he carried Noah onto the arriving train.

The doors closed before Claire reached them.
