CHAPTER 18 : The Woman Who Raised Elias

The older woman aimed the gun at the security cameras.

She fired three times.

Each camera shattered.

Then she lowered the weapon.

“My name is Margaret Vale,” she said. “The woman who left with Celeste is Dr. Evelyn Cross.”

Claire stared at her.

“Evelyn is eighty years old.”

“The woman you met at the nursing facility was an actress.”

Claire thought of the doctor disappearing through the hospital window.

Every answer created another lie.

The real Margaret entered a code into the emergency panel. The red lights stopped flashing, but the station continued trembling.

“We have less than ten minutes before Charles floods the lower levels.”

“You raised that boy?” Claire asked.

Margaret looked at the child beside her.

“I raised Elias until he was five.”

The boy ran to her.

She held him tightly.

Noah watched from Claire’s side.

Claire saw the pain on his face.

“Why does Elias have my son’s memories?”

Margaret led them toward an emergency tunnel.

“Because Daniel copied them.”

Claire stopped.

“What?”

“Project Mirror used more than physical doubles. Charles wanted the substitute child to know everything the original knew—family routines, private conversations, fears, favorite foods.”

“That is impossible.”

“Daniel created a memory-training program to protect Noah. He recorded your home. He documented every important event. Elias was shown those recordings until they became part of his identity.”

Claire looked at the second boy.

He believed the memories belonged to him.

“Daniel did that to a child?”

“He believed it was temporary. Then Charles took control of the program.”

They reached a locked maintenance door.

Margaret placed her palm against the scanner.

“Daniel discovered Charles intended to kill one boy once the identity transfer was complete. He tried to remove both children from the system.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because he did not know which child Charles had returned to your home.”

Claire looked at Noah.

Daniel had doubted the identity of the boy they raised.

“How could they have been exchanged?”

Margaret’s expression filled with regret.

“There was a fire at your country house four years ago.”

Claire remembered.

A small electrical fire had broken out while she attended a company retreat. Daniel and Noah stayed elsewhere for three nights.

“Charles’s people had access to both boys during that period.”

Noah shook his head.

“I remember the fire.”

“So does Elias,” Margaret said.

The emergency door opened.

They entered an old utility tunnel leading away from the station.

A distant explosion shook dust from the ceiling.

Claire thought of Daniel.

“We can’t leave him.”

Margaret caught her arm.

“The man behind the glass may not be your husband.”

“I heard his voice.”

“Project Mirror can reproduce his voice.”

“I saw his face.”

“Charles created a living double years before the digital program.”

Claire pulled away.

“I am done abandoning people because someone tells me they may not be real.”

She ordered Margaret to take the boys toward the surface.

Noah refused.

“I’m coming with you.”

“No.”

“What if I’m not Noah?”

Claire knelt before him.

“You are my son because I raised you, loved you, and chose you every day. No test can change that.”

She kissed his forehead.

“Go with Margaret.”

Noah hugged her tightly.

Elias watched silently.

Then he also wrapped his arms around Claire.

For one brief moment, she held both boys.

Claire returned toward the station alone.

Smoke filled the corridor.

The glass chamber where Daniel had been held was empty.

A trail of blood led toward the archive elevator.

Claire followed it.

The elevator doors stood open.

Inside lay Daniel’s coat.

There was no body.

A phone in the pocket began ringing.

Claire answered.

A man whispered, “You always come back for me.”

She recognized Daniel’s voice.

“Where are you?”

“Inside the final archive.”

“Are you Daniel?”

He laughed softly.

“I was when you married me.”

The elevator descended.

When the doors opened, Claire entered a circular room containing hundreds of video screens.

Each one displayed a different moment from her marriage.

Daniel proposing.

Daniel holding Noah.

Daniel arguing with Claire.

Daniel sleeping beside her.

On several screens, the man had a small scar behind his right ear.

On others, the scar was missing.

Two men had lived Daniel’s life.

A figure stepped from behind the monitors.

He wore Daniel’s face.

Claire raised the gun Margaret had given her.

“Which one are you?”

The man looked hurt.

“The one who loved you.”

A second voice came from behind her.

“So was I.”

Claire turned.

Another Daniel stood at the elevator entrance.

Both men looked at each other.

Then one of them said:

“Claire, shoot him before he remembers what he did to Noah.”
