Chapter 1: The Silence After the Reveal

No one spoke.

Not a whisper. Not a breath too loud.

Three hundred guests stood frozen beneath the glittering chandeliers as Clara Mason slowly closed the leather folder. The soft click echoed louder than the tearing silk had moments before.

Patricia Whitlock’s fingers trembled, the torn lace still clutched in her hand.

“That’s… that’s impossible,” she whispered.

Clara finally stepped forward, her damaged gown trailing behind her like a quiet storm.

“I bought this estate three years ago,” Clara said calmly. “Before I even met your son.”

Andrew blinked, his voice cracking. “Clara… why didn’t you ever say anything?”

She looked at him—really looked at him—for the first time that day.

“Because I wanted to know if you loved me without the name, without the power.”

A pause.

“I have my answer now.”

A ripple of discomfort spread through the room.

The venue manager stood respectfully at her side. “Madam, shall we proceed as planned?”

Clara didn’t look away from Andrew.

“Yes,” she said softly. “But not as a wedding.”

Gasps filled the air.
