Chapter 3: The Contract

At the front of the ballroom, Clara stopped beside a long table.

The venue manager opened the portfolio again, revealing a second set of documents.

“Before this wedding,” Clara said, her voice steady, “a prenuptial agreement was signed.”

Patricia frowned. “Of course it was. My son would never—”

“This one,” Clara interrupted, “was written by me.”

Silence.

Andrew’s hands clenched. “Clara… what are you saying?”

She looked at him with quiet disappointment.

“You signed it without reading carefully.”

A murmur rippled through the guests.

Clara continued, “It states that any act of public humiliation, betrayal, or failure to defend one’s spouse… results in immediate termination of the marriage agreement.”

Andrew’s eyes widened. “That’s ridiculous—”

“It’s legally binding,” the manager added.

Clara’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“And you failed before we even said our vows.”

The words hit harder than any scream.

Patricia stepped back, stunned.

Andrew stood there, speechless.

Clara picked up a pen.

She signed.
