Chapter 13 - When Emma Opened Her Eyes.

Adrian called Ortiz before the silence on Daniel's line had fully registered.
She redirected officers from Vale House to the hidden service level.
The east wing floor plans were incomplete because the basement had been sealed during renovations seventeen years earlier.
Victor knew nothing about it.
Neither did Adrian.
Eleanor had apparently kept an entire level of the family estate outside official records.
Police found the entrance behind a movable wine rack in an old storage room.
Margaret Haines was gone by the time they arrived.
Daniel Brooks was found alive, unconscious from a blow to the head.
He had hidden his phone beneath a metal cabinet before being attacked.
More importantly, officers found the records.
Boxes of them.
Medical files.
Private settlement agreements.
Employee surveillance reports.
And a locked case containing Dr. Malcolm Reed's handwritten treatment notes for Richard Vale.
Ortiz called Adrian from the basement.
"There is evidence here that your father received medication not listed in his official medical chart."
Adrian sat down beside Emma's bed.
"Are you saying he was poisoned?"
"I'm saying the records justify reopening the death investigation."
Victor heard through the open door and covered his mouth with one hand.
Adrian felt no victory.
Only exhaustion.
Every answer seemed to uncover an older betrayal.
Then the monitor beside Emma changed rhythm.
Adrian turned.
Her fingers moved.
Her eyelids fluttered once.
Then opened.
Not a fraction this time.
Fully.
Confused brown eyes searched the room.
Adrian stood so quickly he nearly knocked over the chair.
"Emma."
Dr. Shah hurried in.
Noah woke from the sofa and ran to the bedside.
"Mom!"
Emma looked toward him.
Tears filled her eyes instantly.
She tried to lift her hand.
Noah caught it carefully.
"I'm here."
Her gaze moved to Adrian.
He had imagined this moment a hundred times during the last day.
He had imagined brave words.
He had imagined promises.
Instead, he bent over her and cried.
Emma's fingers touched his cheek.
Her voice was rough beneath the oxygen mask.
"You look terrible."
Adrian laughed through tears.
"You got hit by a car and you're criticizing me?"
A tiny smile moved behind the mask.
Dr. Shah checked her orientation and asked simple questions.
Emma knew her name.
She knew Adrian.
She knew Noah.
She knew the year.
Then Dr. Shah asked whether she remembered the garage.
Emma's smile vanished.
"Yes."
Adrian took her hand.
"Who was driving?"
Emma closed her eyes briefly.
"I couldn't see the face."
"Was it Owen?"
"No."
Victor stepped into view at the doorway.
Emma saw him and stiffened.
Adrian immediately moved between them.
"He says he didn't order the car."
Emma watched Victor for several seconds.
"He didn't."
Victor sagged against the doorframe.
Adrian stared at her.
"How do you know?"
"Because Victor was behind me when the headlights came on."
Victor's eyes widened.
"You saw me?"
Emma nodded weakly.
"You were coming from the elevator."
Adrian felt a piece of the timeline lock into place.
Victor had gone to meet Emma after sending Owen to steal the ledger.
He was guilty of many things.
The attempted murder was not one of them.
"Who drugged your drink?" Adrian asked.
Emma looked toward Noah.
"Not in front of him."
Noah frowned.
"I already know Grandma is bad."
Emma closed her eyes in pain that had nothing to do with her injuries.
Adrian kissed Noah's head.
"Go with Rafael for five minutes."
Noah resisted.
Emma squeezed his hand.
"Please, sweetheart."
He finally left.
Emma waited until the door closed.
Then she looked at Adrian.
"Your mother handed the vial to Margaret."
"Noah saw it."
Emma nodded.
"Margaret poured it into my glass."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her eyes filled with regret.
"Because I needed them to think I drank it."
Adrian stared at her.
"You knew?"
"I saw the reflection in a serving tray."
"Then why was the sedative in your blood?"
Emma's face tightened.
"Because I was wrong about the glass."
Adrian waited.
"They put it in Noah's juice first."
His stomach dropped.
Emma began crying silently.
"I switched glasses to protect him."
Adrian understood.
She had intentionally taken the drug meant for their son.
Then she had still managed to push Noah and Adrian away from the car.
His words from the first night returned with terrible clarity.
Not after what you did for us.
Emma looked at him.
"There's one more thing."
"What?"
"The driver wasn't trying to hit me at first."
Adrian's blood went cold.
May you like
Emma whispered the truth.
"The car was aimed at Noah."
