Chapter 9 - The Lie That Became Evidence.

Detective Ortiz separated the brothers immediately.

Victor gave a recorded statement that lasted nearly two hours.

He admitted stealing money.

He admitted ordering Owen to recover the red folder.

He admitted lying to Adrian, the board, and investigators.

But he denied ordering the attack on Emma.

Ortiz believed part of his story.

Adrian believed none of it completely.

People who lied for years did not become trustworthy because they finally became frightened.

Yet Victor's phone contained messages that supported his claim.

Three days earlier, he had written to Emma.

I will meet you after the foundation dinner.

Emma replied.

Come alone.

Victor answered.

I don't know who is still loyal to her.

Emma's final response was simple.

Neither do I.

That uncertainty infected everyone.

Mason had administrator access to security systems.

Rafael had physical access to the hospital room.

Victor had ordered theft but denied murder.

Eleanor had controlled money and people for decades.

Owen had worked for Victor while apparently taking instructions from Eleanor.

Adrian had no idea where loyalty ended and fear began.

Then the case turned against him.

Ortiz entered Emma's room with two officers and a sealed evidence envelope.

Her expression warned Adrian before she spoke.

"I need you to come with me for a formal interview."

"Why?"

"We recovered footage from the garage."

Adrian's heart jumped.

"The real footage?"

"A second camera from a neighboring building."

"Then you saw the car."

"Yes."

"You saw Emma push us out of the way."

Ortiz hesitated.

"We also saw you arguing with her eleven minutes earlier."

Adrian stared at her.

He remembered the argument.

Emma had confronted him near the elevator because he refused to cancel a meeting with Victor.

She had told him his family was dangerous.

He had told her she was letting suspicion consume her.

He had walked away angry.

In the footage, anger looked uglier without sound.

Adrian pointed at Emma.

"That does not mean I tried to kill my wife."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Ortiz placed the evidence envelope on the table.

Inside was a printed bank transfer.

Two million dollars had moved from Adrian's private investment account to a company that owned the vehicle used in the attack.

Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.

"That's impossible."

"The transfer was initiated yesterday at 5:42 p.m."

"I was onstage at the foundation dinner."

"Someone used your biometric authorization."

"My phone never left me."

Ortiz looked toward Emma's handbag.

"Your backup authentication key did."

Adrian remembered his tuxedo jacket again.

The access credential.

The hidden inner pocket.

Emma had carried it.

Someone close to her could have reached everything.

Rafael said what Adrian was thinking.

"They didn't just try to kill Mrs. Vale."

Ortiz nodded.

"They built evidence to make it look like Mr. Vale paid for it."

Adrian looked at Emma.

The attack suddenly became more sophisticated.

If Emma died and Adrian was arrested, Victor would take temporary control of the company under the succession clause.

If Victor was later implicated in foundation theft, Eleanor would become the next successor.

The entire family could collapse upward into his mother's hands.

Noah listened from the doorway of the adjoining room.

He had been told to stay inside.

He did not.

"Dad didn't hurt Mom."

Adrian turned.

"Noah, go back inside."

"He didn't."

Ortiz crouched gently.

"Nobody said he did."

Noah's face became angry.

"The lady in the silver dress took Dad's black card."

The room went still.

Adrian stared at his son.

"What lady?"

"At dinner."

"What black card?"

Noah pointed toward Adrian's jacket.

"The one from your pocket."

Adrian knelt.

"Tell me exactly what you saw."

Noah thought carefully.

"Mom put your coat on a chair near the stage."

"Okay."

"A lady came over and put a napkin on it."

"Then what?"

"She took the card and put it in her purse."

Adrian's pulse quickened.

"Did you know her?"

Noah shook his head.

"She talked to Grandma a lot."

Ortiz pulled up photographs from the dinner guest list.

Noah rejected one face after another.

Then he touched the screen.

"Her."

Adrian looked at the photograph.

The woman in the silver dress was Margaret Haines.

She was Eleanor's personal attorney.

She had prepared Adrian's father's succession documents.

And she had been the last person known to possess the original Vale Continuity Trust agreement.
