Chapter 5 - A Whisper Through Oxygen.

The police placed Claire Mercer under arrest before noon.
She refused to answer every question except her name.
Her phone had been wiped remotely four minutes after Rafael grabbed her wrist.
The fake nurse badge had been printed on a machine used by a medical supply contractor owned through three shell companies.
The last shell company shared an accountant with Vale Meridian Holdings.
Detective Ortiz did not need to say Victor's name.
Adrian already heard it behind every new fact.
Mason sat alone near the window while Ortiz questioned him again.
Adrian had not fired him.
Not yet.
Seven years of loyalty did not disappear in a morning.
Neither did the knowledge that Mason had concealed Claire's connection to corporate security until she was caught inside Emma's room.
"Why didn't you tell me about her earlier?" Adrian asked.
Mason rubbed both hands over his face.
"Because I didn't recognize her until she screamed."
"You looked at her face."
"She changed her hair, lost weight, and I hadn't seen her in three years."
"Convenient."
Mason flinched.
"I deserve that."
Rafael remained silent beside the door.
Noah colored another picture at the small table.
This time, every person in the picture stood behind a huge black wall.
Adrian looked away from it.
Dr. Shah checked Emma's pupils and reflexes.
"Her swelling is improving."
"When will she wake up?"
"I can't promise a time."
Adrian hated that answer too.
Dr. Shah lowered her voice.
"But she is responding more consistently to familiar voices."
Noah heard that.
He climbed onto the chair beside Emma.
"Mom, Dad is being scary again."
Adrian almost smiled.
"He keeps making everybody nervous."
Rafael covered a cough that sounded suspiciously like a laugh.
Noah leaned closer to the oxygen mask.
"You have to wake up before he fires the whole hospital."
Emma's fingers moved.
Noah gasped.
"Dad."
Adrian was beside the bed instantly.
"Emma?"
Her eyelids fluttered.
Dr. Shah stepped closer but did not touch her.
"Emma, if you can hear me, try to open your eyes."
Nothing happened.
Adrian squeezed her hand.
"Come on, Em."
Her fingers closed around one of his.
The oxygen mask fogged with a deeper breath.
Then her eyes opened a fraction.
They were unfocused and full of pain.
Adrian bent over her.
"I'm here."
Emma tried to speak.
Dr. Shah warned her not to strain.
Emma ignored the warning.
Her gaze found Noah.
A tear slid from the corner of her eye.
Noah began crying too.
"Hi, Mom."
Emma's lips moved behind the mask.
Adrian leaned close enough to hear the breath of her words.
"Red room."
He looked at Dr. Shah.
"Emma, what about it?"
Her eyes struggled to stay open.
"Not Victor."
Adrian froze.
"What?"
Emma's fingers tightened weakly around his.
"Not alone."
The monitor quickened.
Dr. Shah moved in.
"That's enough."
Adrian's heart pounded.
"Who else?"
Emma's eyes rolled toward him.
Fear filled them.
It was the first clear emotion he had seen since the garage.
"Eleanor."
Adrian stepped backward as if struck.
His mother.
Emma tried to keep speaking.
"Key...inside..."
Her voice vanished beneath the oxygen mask.
"Inside what?"
Dr. Shah pressed a button and called for assistance.
Emma's eyes closed again.
The monitor alarmed once before settling.
Adrian stood motionless.
Noah grabbed his hand.
"Dad?"
Dr. Shah checked Emma carefully.
"She's stable."
Adrian barely heard her.
His mother had defended Victor within minutes of entering the hospital.
She had known Emma was investigating missing charity funds.
She had warned Adrian not to burn the family down.
And Emma had just named her.
Rafael stepped closer.
"Sir, we need to reconsider everyone with access."
Adrian nodded.
"Including my mother."
Mason looked miserable.
"There's something else."
Adrian turned sharply.
"You are running out of chances to say that sentence."
Mason reached into his jacket slowly.
Rafael's hand moved toward his weapon.
Mason raised both palms.
"It's Emma's."
He produced a small silver object no larger than a coin.
Adrian recognized it immediately.
It was the decorative clasp from Emma's evening purse.
Mason placed it on the table.
"I found it in the garage after the ambulance left."
Adrian stared at him.
"And you kept it?"
"I thought it was broken jewelry."
Rafael picked it up and pressed the edge.
A tiny red light blinked.
It was not jewelry.
It was a digital storage device.
Adrian connected it to the secure laptop.
One encrypted folder appeared.
