Chapter 6 - The Red File.

Adrian stared at the folder name until the letters blurred.

IF I FALL.

Emma had prepared for the possibility that someone would come after her.

That realization hurt almost as much as seeing her unconscious.

She had been afraid enough to build a safeguard.

She had also been afraid enough not to tell him.

Rafael disconnected the hospital Wi-Fi before Adrian opened anything.

Detective Ortiz returned with a forensic technician and insisted on making a verified copy first.

Adrian wanted to tear through every file immediately.

Instead, he stood beside Noah and watched strangers protect the secrets his wife had carried alone.

The drive contained photographs, spreadsheets, voice recordings, and scanned invoices.

Most were locked behind a second password.

One document opened without encryption.

It was a note written by Emma three nights earlier.

Adrian read it silently at first.

Then Noah asked what it said.

Adrian read only the first lines aloud.

"If anything happens to me, do not assume the first person who looks guilty is the only person involved."

Rafael's eyes narrowed.

Ortiz leaned toward the screen.

The next sentence was worse.

"Victor is moving the money, but Victor is not the one who taught him how."

Adrian stopped reading.

His mother's name was not written anywhere.

It did not need to be.

Emma had always believed Eleanor controlled Victor by giving him just enough approval to keep him desperate for more.

Adrian had dismissed it as an old family pattern rather than a criminal one.

He suddenly felt foolish for every time he had told Emma not to take his mother's comments personally.

Ortiz pointed to a file labeled RED_LEDGER.jpg.

The image showed a leather folder on a dark wooden desk.

A brass key lay beside it.

The corner of an old family portrait was visible in the background.

Adrian knew the room immediately.

His father's library.

Emma had found the red folder there.

Another photograph showed handwritten account numbers connected by arrows.

Some led to construction companies.

Some led to charities.

Three led to a private trust registered in Luxembourg.

At the center of Emma's notes, she had written a name.

Vale Continuity Trust.

Adrian frowned.

"I've never heard of that."

Ortiz asked whether his father had created it.

"Maybe."

"Who controls it?"

Adrian shook his head.

The forensic technician opened a scanned legal memo.

The document was dated eleven days before Adrian's father died.

It described a succession clause that would transfer temporary voting control of Vale Meridian if Adrian became incapacitated or publicly implicated in financial crimes.

The first successor was Victor.

The second was Eleanor.

The final paragraph contained a handwritten amendment.

If fraud was discovered within the foundation, an independent family trustee could suspend both successors.

That trustee was Emma Vale.

Adrian felt cold spread through his chest.

Emma had not simply discovered stolen money.

She had possessed the legal power to stop Victor and Eleanor from taking control.

Noah tugged his sleeve.

"Why does Mom's name say trustee?"

Adrian closed the document.

"Because Grandpa trusted her."

Noah seemed satisfied.

Adrian was not.

His father had secretly given Emma authority over the entire family empire and never told Adrian.

Ortiz opened one of the audio recordings.

Static filled the room.

Then Victor's voice emerged.

"She found the ledger."

A woman's voice answered from farther away.

"Then take it back."

Adrian stopped breathing.

He knew the voice.

Eleanor.

Victor sounded angry.

"You said nobody would ever open that room."

"I said nobody intelligent would open it without understanding the consequences."

"She photographed everything."

There was a pause.

Then Eleanor spoke with chilling calm.

"Emma has always mistaken courage for permission."

The recording ended.

Noah looked frightened.

Adrian closed the laptop.

He would not let his son hear more.

Ortiz's face had become hard.

"This gives me enough to search Vale House."

Adrian nodded.

"Take everything."

"You understand that includes material that may damage your company?"

"I said everything."

Mason stepped closer.

"Sir, if Victor knows Emma made copies, he'll destroy the originals."

Ortiz was already calling the judge.

Adrian looked through the window at the pale morning sky.

He remembered his mother's warning not to burn the family down.

Now he understood what she had really meant.

Protect the name.

Protect the company.

Protect the lie.

Emma had chosen something else.

She had protected Noah.

She had protected Adrian.

And she had nearly died for it.

Rafael's phone rang.

His face changed while he listened.

"What?" Adrian asked.

Rafael ended the call.

"Vale House security just reported a fire."

Adrian's stomach dropped.

"Where?"

May you like

Rafael looked at the photograph on the laptop.

"Your father's library."
