Chapter 1 - The Promise

The sterile smell of bleach hung heavily in the air of the hospital room.

A rhythmic beeping from the heart monitor was the only sound breaking the heavy silence.

Elias sat motionless in a hard plastic chair pulled close to the bed.

He wore a sharp black suit that felt entirely out of place in the clinical environment.

A gold cross necklace rested against his dark button-down shirt.

His large, weathered hand gently cradled the frail, pale hand of a twelve-year-old girl.

Her name was Lily.

She lay unconscious on the stark white sheets.

A small, white bandage was taped carefully over a dark bruise on her cheek.

Elias stared at that bandage, feeling a cold, familiar rage simmering deep in his chest.

He had left his old life behind to keep her safe.

He had traded a world of shadows for school drop-offs and quiet weekends.

But the real world always had a way of breaking through the illusion of safety.

Suddenly, a muffled burst of laughter drifted in from the hallway.

Elias did not turn his head, but his jaw tightened instinctively.

In the doorway stood three teenage boys.

They wore casual hoodies, their faces twisted into smug, mocking grins.

They whispered to each other, pointing toward the hospital bed and laughing disruptively.

They thought this was just a game.

They thought their cruel actions carried absolutely no consequences.

Elias slowly lifted his gaze.

His eyes locked onto the teenagers with a dead, calculating stare.

The boys noticed his look and their nervous laughter faltered immediately.

They shifted uncomfortably under his intense, predatory scrutiny.

Elias reached into his inside jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek black smartphone.

He dialed a heavily encrypted number, his eyes never leaving the doorway.

The phone rang exactly twice before a gruff voice answered on the other end.

"Talk to me," the voice said through the earpiece.

Elias tightened his grip subtly on his daughter's fragile hand.

He leaned forward, conveying a silent, protective promise to the sleeping girl.

"I have a job for you, Marcus," Elias said softly but firmly.

"Name it," Marcus replied without hesitation.

Elias watched as the three boys finally lost their nerve and scurried away down the hall.

"Look into everyone connected to those three names I sent you."

There was a heavy, knowing pause on the line.

Marcus understood exactly what kind of door Elias was about to open.

"Are you absolutely sure about this?" Marcus asked.

Elias looked back down at Lily's pale face.

His expression hardened into an unyielding mask of cold resolve.

"The boss is back?" Marcus asked, a hint of old loyalty coloring his filtered voice.

Elias narrowed his eyes, and deep, heavy tension completely filled the small room.

May you like

"No," Elias coldly whispered.

"A father is."
