Chapter 3 - The Awakening

The first pale rays of morning sunlight cut softly through the hospital window blinds.
Elias had not moved from his chair all night long.
He sat with his broad shoulders slightly slumped, his eyes fixed steadily on his daughter's face.
Lily’s eyelids fluttered gently against the morning light.
A soft, natural sigh escaped her lips as she slowly began to stir from her deep, exhausted slumber.
Elias immediately leaned forward, his entire body coming alive with focused attention.
"Lily," he whispered softly, his deep voice thick with quiet emotion.
The young girl slowly opened her eyes, blinking away the heavy fog of sleep.
She looked around the sterile hospital room with a look of mild, lingering confusion.
Her gaze finally landed on the tall, familiar figure sitting right beside her bed.
"Dad?" she murmured, her voice sounding raspy and fragile.
"I'm right here, sweetie," Elias replied, gently taking her small hand back into his large, warm palm.
Lily tried to shift her position, instantly wincing as a sharp pain flared up along her bruised cheek.
She instinctively reached up with her free hand to touch the white bandage.
"Don't touch it, Lily," Elias said gently, his fingers carefully guiding her hand away from her face.
"What happened?" Lily asked softly, tears welling up in the corners of her big, innocent eyes.
"Those boys from the skate park... they laughed at me, and then..."
Her voice trailed off as the frightening memory of the incident flashed vividly through her mind.
"You don't need to worry about them anymore," Elias interrupted smoothly, his tone remarkably calm yet absolute.
"They won't ever bother you again, I promise you that."
Lily looked up into her father's intense eyes, finding a deep sense of unshakeable safety there.
"Are you sure, Dad?" she asked quietly, a small, hopeful smile finally touching her lips.
"I am completely sure," Elias answered with a reassuring nod.
Just then, the hospital door swung open with a sharp, unexpected creak.
Dr. Evans stepped back inside the room, holding a fresh medical chart and looking utterly bewildered.
He stopped in his tracks, staring directly down at Lily with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"Good morning, Dr. Evans," Elias said calmly, standing up to face the doctor.
"Good morning," the doctor replied, his voice laced with absolute shock as he checked Lily's monitor.
"Her cognitive functions are completely clear, and her vitals are entirely normal."
"This is nothing short of an absolute medical miracle, Mr. Vance."
"She is completely ready to be discharged right now, if you wish."
Elias let out a steady, relieved breath and looked down at his daughter.
"We are going home, Lily," Elias announced softly.
Lily nodded happily, sliding out from beneath the crisp white hospital sheets.
She grabbed her small jacket from the bedside chair and slipped her arms into the sleeves.

Together, father and daughter walked out of the hospital doors into the bright morning air.
Little did they know, the rest of the city was already waking up to total, unadulterated chaos.
