Chapter 4 - The Price of Arrogance

The morning sun cast a golden glow over the quiet suburban neighborhood.
Elias unlocked the front door of their cozy, unassuming house.
Lily stepped inside, breathing in the comforting scent of old books and home.
"It's so good to be back," Lily said softly, dropping her small jacket onto the entryway chair.
"Go wash up, sweetie," Elias said with a gentle smile.
"I'll make us some warm breakfast."
Lily nodded and skipped lightly toward the bathroom, her previous pain completely forgotten.
Elias walked over to the kitchen counter and placed his car keys down.
His phone buzzed instantly, lighting up with a fresh notification from Marcus.
Elias picked up the device and unlocked it with a quick glance.
A detailed report filled the screen.
The accounts belonging to the Trenton, Hayes, and Carmichael families had been completely frozen before dawn.
Their corporate stocks were plummeting by the minute on the open market.
Their hidden offshore assets had been exposed and legally seized due to historical compliance audits.
In less than four hours, three of the wealthiest dynasties in the city had been stripped of every single cent.
Elias scrolled down calmly, reading the rapid updates with a cold, expressionless face.
Just then, his phone buzzed with an incoming call.
It was a direct line from Arthur Trenton, the patriarch of the Trenton family.
Arthur was a man known for his brutal business tactics and unyielding arrogance.
Elias pressed the answer button and brought the phone slowly to his ear.
He remained completely silent, letting the heavy weight of anticipation hang in the air.
"Who is this?!" Arthur’s voice screamed through the speaker, frantic and utterly panicked.
"All of our corporate accounts are locked!"
"Our bank cards are being declined everywhere!"
"Whoever you are, if this is some kind of sick joke, it has gone far enough!"
Elias listened to the desperate breakdown with absolute indifference.
"You should teach your son how to behave in public, Arthur," Elias said quietly, his voice cutting through the panic like a razor blade.
A stunned silence fell over the other end of the line.
"Elias?" Arthur whispered, the color draining from his voice as recognition finally struck.
"It can't be you."
"You walked away from all of that years ago."
"I walked away from the violence, Arthur," Elias corrected him coldly.
"I never said I forgot how to protect what is mine."
"Please," Arthur begged, his voice cracking with sudden humiliation and terror.
"Name your price."
"Just give us our lives back."
Elias looked through the kitchen window toward the hallway where Lily was happily humming a tune.
"Some things cannot be bought back with money, Arthur," Elias said softly.
"Consider this a very expensive lesson in humility."
Elias pressed the end call button without waiting for another word.

He tossed the phone onto the kitchen counter and pulled out a clean frying pan.
The storm had passed, and peace had finally returned to their home.
