Ruth broke the emergency glass with the metal base of a fire extinguisher.
The sound was swallowed by the alarm.
Claire pulled the small axe free and struck the chain lock twice.
On the third blow, it snapped.
They crossed the maintenance bridge into the parking garage while the roof door behind them burst open.
Elena did not look back until Sophie was safely on the other side.
Two men in gray maintenance shirts reached the bridge.
One raised his hands.
"Ms. Mercer, we're only here to talk."
Claire shouted, "Then talk to the police."
The men stopped when they saw pedestrians below looking upward.
Public attention was the one thing Adrian's people feared.
The women descended the garage stairs and emerged onto a side street.
A patrol car reached them minutes later.
This time Elena insisted on filing a separate intimidation report.
The officers obtained security footage from Claire's building.
The two men were not hotel employees or maintenance workers.
One had previously worked as private security for Vale Meridian.
The second was a process server who had done contract work for Martin Shaw's firm.
The story had become bigger than one wedding-day assault.
It had become a coordinated effort to control Elena, Sophie, and the evidence.
That evening, Claire arranged a press conference in front of the county courthouse.
Elena initially refused.
She wanted privacy, not cameras.
Claire made the argument she hated but understood.
"Adrian is using silence as empty space he can fill with lies."
Ruth added, "Then fill it with the truth."
Elena stood before the microphones still wearing ordinary borrowed clothes because her luggage remained at the hotel.
The bruise on her cheek was no longer hidden by wedding makeup.
She did not release the full evidence.
The detective had asked her to protect the investigation.
She said only what could not be twisted.
"Yesterday I canceled my wedding because the man I was supposed to marry struck my seven-year-old daughter and threatened her if she told me."
Camera shutters rattled.
"I struck him once after witnessing what he had done, and I will answer honestly for my actions."
She paused.
"But I will not allow a video that begins after my child was assaulted to become the whole story."
Reporters shouted questions.
Elena raised one hand.
"My daughter is not a prop in a scandal, and I will not expose her to more public attention than necessary."
She walked away without mentioning the trust.
That restraint changed the coverage.
People began asking why Adrian's team had released a clipped video so quickly.
A local station confirmed that hotel hallway cameras had gone offline for exactly seven minutes.
Another outlet reported that the outage was manually scheduled from an administrative account linked to Vale Meridian's event contractor.
For the first time, Adrian lost control of the narrative.
By nightfall, the police executed a warrant on Martin Shaw's office.
The missing videographer, Noah Pierce, was found alive at a motel outside the city.
He had not been kidnapped.
He had been terrified.
Noah told investigators that a Vale security contractor confronted him after the canceled wedding and demanded his camera cards.
He handed over the main cards but secretly mailed one backup to Elena.
Then he hid because the men knew where his girlfriend worked.
His statement connected the intimidation to the stolen footage.
Elena finally allowed herself to believe Adrian could be stopped.
Then Claire received an emergency filing from family court.
Sophie's paternal grandmother, Margaret Hale, had petitioned for temporary guardianship.
Margaret had been distant since Michael's death and had barely seen Sophie in two years.
Her affidavit repeated Adrian's accusations almost word for word.
Attached to it was a psychiatric evaluation claiming Elena suffered from delusional episodes and violent instability.
Elena stared at the doctor's signature.
She had never met the doctor.
Claire's face went cold.
"They forged a medical record."
The hearing was scheduled for eight the next morning.
And until the judge ruled, Adrian's lie had finally reached the one place Elena feared most.
After the press conference, Elena received hundreds of messages from strangers.
Some were kind.
Some were cruel.
Several told her she should have known better than to marry a controlling man.
She deleted those without answering.
The most important message came from a former Vale Meridian assistant named Paige Monroe.
Paige wrote that Adrian had asked staff months earlier to compile information about Elena's family disputes, medical appointments, and financial accounts.
She had resigned after being told to locate an old complaint involving Sophie's former nanny.
Paige still had emails.
Claire contacted the detective immediately.
The messages showed Adrian personally requesting material that later appeared in the false child-welfare report.
