Chapter 6 - The Story He Prepared.

The report accused Elena of emotional instability, violent outbursts, and leaving Sophie unattended for hours.
None of it was true.
That did not make it harmless.
Adrian had photographs.
He had messages.
He had witnesses.
The first photograph showed a bruise on Sophie's knee from a playground fall.
The second showed the child asleep alone on a sofa during a birthday party while Elena stood in another room.
The messages were fragments of ordinary arguments between Elena and Adrian, cut to make her sound irrational.
The witness statement came from a former nanny Elena had fired for stealing prescription medication from the house.
Claire read the summary over the officer's shoulder and muttered one furious word.
"Manufactured."
Adrian stood fifteen feet away, pretending not to listen.
Elena wanted to cross the hallway and strike him again.
She did not.
That was what he wanted.
She crouched beside Sophie instead.
"We are going to answer every question calmly."
Sophie looked at Adrian.
"Will they make me go with him?"
"No."
Elena said it before she knew whether anyone could promise it.
The female officer heard and added, "He has no legal custody of you."
Adrian's face tightened.
Martin Shaw immediately pulled him aside.
Claire leaned close to Elena.
"That matters."
"What?"
"They're rushing because they needed the marriage and adoption before anyone looked closely."
The police took statements in a private conference room.
Sophie described the hallway without hesitation.
Elena described the bruise on her own cheek and the argument that caused it.
Adrian described Elena as exhausted, confused, and dangerous.
He even cried once.
It was an impressive performance.
By midnight, the police had not arrested anyone.
They documented Sophie's red cheek, collected names of witnesses, and instructed both adults not to contact each other.
A child welfare investigator would follow up on the earlier report.
Elena hated that Adrian had managed to turn protecting her daughter into another threat hanging above them.
Claire drove them away from the hotel in her old silver SUV.
Elena sat in the back beside Sophie.
The child fell asleep before they reached the freeway.
Only then did Elena allow herself to cry.
Claire did not tell her to stop.
After several minutes, she said, "We need to know what Adrian wanted you to sign."
Elena looked out at the city lights.
"The folder is gone."
"Maybe not every copy."
Claire drove to her office rather than Elena's house.
The Vale family knew where Elena lived.
Claire's firm occupied the sixth floor of an old brick building with no doorman, no wedding guests, and no Vale-funded security.
They settled Sophie on a sofa with a blanket.
Claire opened her laptop.
"Forward me the emergency audio."
The file was gone from the family app.
Elena stared at the empty event history.
"He erased it."
Claire checked the tablet downloads.
Nothing.
Elena felt the room tilt.
Then Sophie spoke from the sofa.
"It sent to Grandma too."
Elena turned.
"What?"
"The blue watch calls you, Aunt Claire, and Grandma when I press the button."
Claire froze.
Elena's mother, Ruth, lived forty minutes outside the city and had refused to attend the wedding after Adrian banned her from giving a toast.
Elena grabbed Claire's phone and called.
Ruth answered on the second ring.
"Elena?"
Her voice sounded strained.
"Mom, did Sophie's watch send you anything today?"
A long silence followed.
Then Ruth whispered, "Yes."
Elena closed her eyes in relief.
"Do you still have it?"
"I copied it the moment I heard it."
Claire smiled for the first time all night.
Then Ruth added, "But Elena, that isn't the only thing I have."
"What do you mean?"
"Adrian came to my house three weeks ago."
Elena's breath caught.
"Why?"
Before leaving the hotel district, Claire drove past Elena's house but did not stop.
A black sedan sat half a block away with its lights off.
Elena recognized it as one of the cars Adrian's company used for executives.
Claire kept driving and called the detective from the next intersection.
The sedan pulled away before officers arrived.
That sight ended Elena's last temptation to return home for clothes or comfort.
Adrian had spent months making his presence feel like protection, and now the same drivers, guards, and assistants made familiar places unsafe.
Sophie slept through the detour with one hand curled around the sleeve of Elena's borrowed coat.
Elena watched her daughter in the mirror and understood that leaving would require more than rejecting Adrian.

They would have to dismantle the network he had placed around their daily lives.
"He offered me two hundred thousand dollars to sign a statement saying you're an unfit mother."
