Chapter 2 - The Ring on the Marble.

For one stunned second, nobody in the ballroom moved.

Then the whispering began.

It rolled through the guests faster than music, carried by people who had come expecting vows and suddenly smelled scandal.

Elena stared at Adrian across the aisle.

He no longer looked like a man who had just been thrown to the floor.

He looked composed.

Prepared.

That frightened her more.

Celeste Vale hurried toward him and touched his reddening cheek.

"What did she do to you?"

Adrian kept his eyes on Elena.

"She's panicking again."

Claire reached Elena first.

"What happened?"

Sophie lifted her face from Elena's shoulder.

"He hit me."

Claire's expression hardened.

Elena said, "Get my bag and Sophie's things."

Adrian raised his voice just enough for the nearest guests to hear.

"Elena has been under terrible stress since we started planning the wedding."

She almost laughed at the precision of it.

He was not defending himself.

He was building a record.

Celeste turned toward the guests with practiced sorrow.

"Please give the family privacy."

Elena saw two members of the hotel's private security team appear at the rear doors.

They were not looking at Adrian.

They were looking at her.

Adrian walked slowly down the aisle.

"Put Sophie down, Elena."

Sophie clung tighter.

"No."

The small word carried through the room.

Adrian stopped.

"You are frightening her."

Elena felt the bruise beneath her makeup pulse as if her body itself were calling him a liar.

She turned her face toward the crowd so the left side caught the chandelier light.

Several people gasped.

Claire stared at the bruise.

"He did that too?"

Adrian's jaw clenched.

"She slipped last night."

Elena said, "He struck me when I told him I wanted to postpone the wedding."

Celeste's face went white with fury, but not at her son.

"This is not the place for private accusations."

"He made it public when he hit my child in your hallway."

One of the security officers approached.

"Ma'am, we need everyone to remain calm."

Elena recognized the trap in the word everyone.

It placed her anger on the same level as Adrian's violence.

She looked directly at the officer.

"Call the police."

Adrian answered before the officer could.

"That won't be necessary."

"I wasn't asking you."

The room shifted again.

People began taking out phones.

Celeste snapped at the bandleader to stop the music completely.

Adrian leaned closer to Elena and lowered his voice.

"Think very carefully about what you do next."

"I am."

"If you walk out that door, everything changes."

"That's the idea."

His eyes flicked toward Sophie.

"Including what happens to her."

Elena felt cold spread through her chest.

Claire returned with a white overnight bag and Elena's purse.

"Your phone isn't in here."

Elena frowned.

She had left it in the bridal suite thirty minutes earlier.

It contained her messages, banking access, photographs, and the audio note she had recorded after Adrian struck her the night before.

She looked at Adrian.

He smiled without warmth.

"Lose something?"

Claire heard him.

"Elena, we're leaving now."

They turned toward the side exit.

The two security officers stepped into their path.

Adrian said, "Until this is sorted out, nobody leaves with Sophie."

Elena stared at him.

"You are not her father."

"Not yet."

The words landed strangely.

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian glanced toward Celeste.

For the first time, something uncertain crossed his face.

Sophie suddenly pulled away from Elena's shoulder.

"Mom."

"What is it, baby?"

The child looked terrified.

"I heard him talking to the lawyer."

Adrian took one step forward.

"Sophie, stop."

Elena backed away with her daughter.

"Tell me."

Sophie swallowed.

"He said after you signed, my daddy's money would be his."

The ballroom became so quiet that Elena heard the diamond ring still spinning somewhere in her memory.

A bridesmaid near the front row began crying and told another guest she had seen Adrian arguing with Elena the previous evening.

Celeste immediately ordered the woman to stop spreading gossip.

That reaction drew more attention than silence would have.

Elena watched guests who had admired Adrian for years begin studying him with a different expression.

Some looked skeptical.

Some looked uncomfortable.

A few quietly moved closer to the exits instead of closer to him.

The minister closed the ceremony folder and stepped away from the altar without saying a word.

It was a small gesture, but Elena felt its weight.

One by one, pieces of the perfect event were refusing to cooperate with Adrian's version of reality.

He seemed to notice the same thing.

His hand disappeared into his jacket, and Elena saw him send a message without taking his eyes off her.

Seconds later, the hallway lights failed.

Then every light in the hallway behind them went out.
