Chapter 7 - The Mother He Tried to Buy.

Elena had spent a year believing Adrian disliked Ruth because Ruth was blunt, suspicious, and impossible to impress.
Now she understood he had feared her.
Ruth arrived at Claire's office just after one in the morning carrying a grocery bag, a laptop, and the anger of a woman who had been waiting too long to be proven right.
She hugged Sophie first.
Then she looked at Elena's bruised cheek.
Her face broke.
"He did that?"
Elena nodded.
Ruth touched her daughter's face carefully.
"I should have dragged you out the first time I saw him grab your arm."
Elena shook her head.
"I should have left the first time he made me afraid to disagree with him."
There was no time to argue over who should have known sooner.
Claire opened Ruth's laptop.
The emergency clip was still attached to an automated safety email.
They downloaded three copies and saved them to separate drives.
Ruth then opened a second folder.
Inside were scanned documents and photographs of Adrian standing on her porch three weeks earlier.
"I started recording after he offered me the money."
Elena stared at her mother.
"You recorded him?"
Ruth gave her a tired look.
"I raised you before smartphones existed, sweetheart, but I learned."
The audio was not perfect.
Traffic passed in the background.
A dog barked next door.
Adrian's voice, however, was unmistakable.
He told Ruth that Elena was overwhelmed and that a supportive statement could make the transition after the wedding easier.
Ruth asked what transition he meant.
Adrian said, "Once I'm legally Sophie's father, I can protect the trust from Elena's emotional decisions."
Claire stopped the playback.
"There."
Elena felt rage crawl up her spine.
"He wanted control of Sophie's money."
"At minimum, he wanted leverage over it," Claire said.
Ruth opened another file.
"He left this by accident."
It was a printed draft of a guardianship affidavit with Ruth's name already typed beneath a blank signature line.
The document claimed Elena had become increasingly unstable after Michael's death.
It also claimed Adrian had acted as Sophie's primary caregiver for nearly a year.
That was absurd.
Adrian had never attended a parent-teacher conference.
He did not know the name of Sophie's pediatrician.
He had once asked Elena which elementary school Sophie attended while standing in the school parking lot.
Claire photographed every page.
"This is enough to blow apart their child welfare story."
Elena stared at Adrian's typed lies.
"Then why do I feel like we're still behind?"
Claire looked at the clock.
"Because we are."
Her phone began vibrating.
News alerts had started appearing.
A wedding guest had uploaded a video showing Elena slapping Adrian and pushing him to the floor.
The clip began two seconds after Sophie said he hit her.
It showed no assault on the child.
It showed no threat.
It showed a bride attacking a groom in front of horrified guests.
The caption read: BILLIONAIRE WEDDING ENDS IN VIOLENT MELTDOWN.
Within minutes, other accounts copied it.
Adrian's public relations team issued a statement before two in the morning.
It asked for compassion for Elena during what it called "an apparent emotional crisis."
Elena read the line twice.
He was turning her bruise, her daughter's tears, and his own violence into evidence that she was unstable.
Ruth cursed under her breath.
Claire opened another screen.
"This was coordinated."
"How can you tell?"
"Same phrasing across six accounts within three minutes."
Elena's phone was still missing, but her life was already being rewritten online by people who had never met her.
Sophie stirred on the sofa.
Elena closed the laptop so the child would not see the video.
Then a new message appeared on Claire's phone from an unknown number.
A photograph loaded first.
It showed Elena's house from across the street.
The porch light was on.
The front door stood open.
Under the photograph were four words.
Ruth also admitted why she had never told Elena about the attempted bribe.
Adrian had threatened to use the old feud between Ruth and Michael's parents to make Elena believe the warning came from jealousy.
Ruth had been afraid that confronting Elena without proof would push her deeper toward him.
Instead, she collected everything she could.
She saved voicemail backups.
She photographed his car.
She wrote down the exact time of every visit.
Elena felt a painful mixture of gratitude and anger.
"You should have told me."
Ruth nodded.
"I know."
There was no defense in her voice.
"I thought evidence would make you safer than another argument between us."
Elena looked at the files and realized every person Adrian tried to isolate had been holding a fragment of the truth.

The fragments were finally beginning to touch.
COME HOME FOR YOUR PHONE.
