Chapter 1 - The Doorway of Glass.

Claire Mercer had imagined a hundred versions of coming home early, but none of them included her five-year-old son crying on a white marble floor.
Her suitcase rolled two feet into the kitchen before her hand released the handle.
Leo sat beside the island with his knees pulled to his chest, his messy hair stuck to his wet forehead and a red smear of frosting across his white T-shirt.
A ruined birthday cake lay crushed across the marble counter like something had been punched straight through its center.
Dominic stood on the opposite side of the island with one hand around a wineglass and the other resting far too comfortably on the waist of a dark-haired woman in a red dress.
His mother, Evelyn, watched from the breakfast nook while holding Claire's eight-month-old daughter, Mia, against her shoulder.
No one moved when Claire entered.
The chandelier above them made everything look painfully clean.
"Leo! My baby, what happened to you?"
Leo tried to answer, but his mouth trembled before any words came out.
Dominic gave a short laugh that sounded almost bored.
"Look at your little beast."
Claire stared at him as if she had misunderstood the language.
The woman in red lowered her eyes, but the smile at the corner of her mouth did not disappear.
Claire crossed the kitchen and dropped to her knees beside Leo.
There was a faint purple mark on his upper arm.
He flinched when she touched it.
That tiny movement changed something inside her.
She looked up at Dominic without raising her voice.
"Who touched him?"
Dominic took another drink.
"He threw a tantrum because Sienna cut the cake before dinner."
Leo shook his head quickly.
"I didn't."
Evelyn sighed from the corner.
"Claire, don't encourage him."
Claire turned toward her mother-in-law.
Mia was wearing the yellow sleeper Claire had packed before her business trip, but the baby's diaper bag was nowhere in sight.
A bottle sat on the table beside Evelyn, half full and uncovered.
Claire had been gone for four days, not four months, yet the house felt as if someone else had occupied it for years.
She slowly stood.
Dominic's expression remained smug until Claire reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
"What are you doing?"
She ignored him and called Rachel Dunn, the attorney who had handled the corporate trust after Claire's father died.
Rachel answered on the second ring.
"Claire?"
"Bring all the documents."
Dominic's smile faded slightly.
Claire kept her eyes on him.
"Freeze all company assets immediately."
The room went silent.
Sienna stepped away from Dominic's side.
Evelyn sat straighter.
Dominic set his glass down hard enough to splash wine over his hand.
"Claire, you—!"
He lunged around the island, but Claire moved between him and Leo before he could finish.
"Take one more step toward my son, and every camera in this house will record exactly what happens next."
Dominic stopped.
For the first time since she had entered, panic crossed his face.
Not anger.
Panic.
Claire noticed it immediately.
She also noticed Sienna glance toward the small office beside the pantry.
It lasted less than a second.
May you like
But it was enough.
Claire looked at the closed office door and understood that the ruined cake was not the only thing waiting for her in that house.
