Chapter 14 - What the Cake Knocked Loose.

Rachel arrived at the hotel before sunrise with Nathan and the company's technology chief.
No one touched the USB drive until it had been photographed, copied, and placed inside an evidence bag.
The duplicate was opened on an isolated laptop.
A single encrypted file appeared.
Nathan tried the corporate passwords.
None worked.
Claire tried Dominic's birthday, their anniversary, Leo's birthday, and Mia's birthday.
Nothing.
Then Leo, eating cereal beside them, looked at the screen.
"Daddy always types Grandma's old house number."
Everyone turned toward him.
Claire crouched beside his chair.
"How do you know that?"
"He says numbers out loud when he gets mad at the computer."
Evelyn's old house number had been 1847.
Nathan entered it.
The file opened.
The master encryption key appeared first.
The technology chief exhaled so loudly that Leo giggled.
Then another folder appeared beneath it.
FINANCIAL EXIT.
Inside were spreadsheets documenting every transfer Dominic had planned for the next six months.
Harbor Consulting was only the beginning.
Northstar was only the bridge.
Dominic intended to drain more than six million dollars through a chain of shell companies before the end of the year.
He had also prepared resignation letters for three executives, fake performance complaints against Nathan, and a draft press statement describing Claire as mentally unstable.
The final document was titled FAMILY TRANSITION.
Claire opened it with shaking hands.
It contained a private school application for Mia in the Cayman Islands.
There was no application for Leo.
Claire stared at the screen.
"He was going to take Mia and leave Leo behind."
Rachel said nothing.
Evelyn began to cry.
"Why Mia?"
Claire already knew.
Mia was a beneficiary of Claire's family trust.
As the parent caring for her abroad, Dominic intended to use the child's trust distributions as leverage in future negotiations.
Leo was older.
Leo could speak.
Leo remembered things.
Dominic had chosen the child who could not tell anyone what happened.
Claire closed the laptop.
By midmorning, the company restored its encrypted backups.
The missing records returned.
The board authorized a full forensic audit.
The bank confirmed the international transfer had been stopped.
For the first time since Claire walked into the ruined kitchen, Dominic's plan was not merely failing.
It was collapsing in every direction at once.
Then Claire received a message from him.
One sentence.
Bring the drive to the house at six, or I tell everyone you planted it.
Rachel read it and shook her head.
"Do not answer."
Claire didn't.
Another message arrived.
You know no one will believe a five-year-old found the one thing that saves you.
Claire looked at Leo playing with Mia on the carpet.
Dominic still believed the story depended on adults believing Leo.
He had forgotten about the cameras.
The full kitchen footage showed the cake falling.
It showed the USB drive sliding from Dominic's pocket and skidding beneath the cabinet.
It showed Leo finding it later while everyone argued.
Claire forwarded the clip to Rachel.
At six o'clock, Claire did not go to the house.
Investigators did.
Dominic arrived carrying an empty backpack and broke the temporary seal on the office door.
He was recorded searching the desk, the cabinet, and the burned wastebasket.
When officers approached him, his arrogance finally disappeared.
He did not shout Claire's name.
He did not threaten the board.

He only asked one question.
"Did she find the drive?"
