Chapter 6 - The Missing Million.

Claire did not sleep that night.

Leo finally drifted off beside her in the hotel bed while Mia slept in a portable crib near the window.

Claire sat at the small dining table with Rachel and watched numbers appear across a spreadsheet that made her marriage look less like a betrayal and more like an organized theft.

The one-point-eight-million-dollar transfer had gone to Northstar Family Ventures.

The company had been created six weeks earlier.

Its registered manager was Evelyn Mercer.

Claire read the line twice.

"His mother?"

Rachel nodded.

"And there is more."

Northstar had opened its account using a board authorization carrying Claire's electronic signature.

Claire stared at the signature block.

"I never approved this."

"I know."

"Can we prove that?"

"The document metadata may help, but I need the original server copy."

Claire looked toward Leo.

Her son was curled around one of the hotel pillows as if he was afraid someone might take it from him.

"Dominic knew I was coming home tomorrow."

Rachel leaned back.

"Yes."

"Then why move the money today?"

Neither woman answered immediately.

Claire's phone buzzed.

Dominic had sent fourteen messages in thirty minutes.

The first three were furious.

The next five accused Claire of destroying the company.

The final messages were suddenly gentle.

Please come home.

We can fix this.

Leo misunderstood what happened.

Sienna means nothing.

Mom is upset and scared.

I love you.

Claire set the phone face down.

Rachel watched her carefully.

"Do not respond tonight."

"I wasn't going to."

Another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph.

It showed Claire at an airport restaurant three months earlier, sitting across from a male executive during a business trip.

The angle made the meeting look secretive.

The caption underneath read: I have evidence too.

Claire recognized the man immediately.

"That's Daniel Cho from the acquisition team."

"Dominic knows that."

"Then why send this?"

Rachel's expression tightened.

"Because he may not be trying to convince you."

The implication settled slowly.

Dominic was creating a record.

A story.

Claire abandoned her family for work.

Claire had an affair.

Claire returned home unstable and immediately froze company accounts.

Claire took the children and disappeared into a hotel.

Every true fact could be rearranged until it told a lie.

A knock came at the suite door.

Claire froze.

Rachel looked through the peephole.

"Hotel security."

The guard entered carrying a padded envelope that had been left at reception.

There was no sender's name.

Inside was a photocopy of a legal document titled AMENDED VOTING PROXY AND TEMPORARY EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY.

Claire's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did the date.

Three weeks earlier, while Claire had been in Seattle.

The document gave Dominic temporary control of Claire's voting shares if she became "medically or emotionally incapable of responsible executive judgment."

Claire felt her stomach drop.

"This is forged."

Rachel turned to the second page.

Attached was a letter from a private physician Claire had never met.

It described Claire as suffering from severe anxiety, impulsive behavior, and possible paranoid episodes.

"This is not about divorce," Claire whispered.

Rachel looked at her.

"No."

Claire stared toward the sleeping children.

"He was preparing to declare me unstable."

Her phone buzzed again.

This time the message came from Evelyn.

You should have stayed on your trip.
