Chapter 11 - The Mother Who Changed Sides.

Evelyn did not leave the courthouse with Dominic.
She stood beneath the stone archway while her son argued with his attorney near the curb.
Then she walked toward Claire.
Rachel immediately stepped between them.
"I need to speak to her," Evelyn said.
Claire held her gaze.
"You had plenty of chances in my kitchen."
Evelyn looked older than she had the day before.
The polished confidence was gone.
"I did not know about Mia's passport."
Claire's expression hardened.
"You knew about Leo."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"You watched him get locked in a pantry."
"Yes."
"You told Dominic he could hit him."
Evelyn's face crumpled for a moment.
"Yes."
Claire wanted to walk away.
Then Evelyn said, "The transfer was scheduled."
Rachel turned back.
"What transfer?"
"The money from Northstar."
Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed a small notebook.
"Dominic created the account in my name because he said it was a temporary holding company for a tax restructuring."
"And you believed him?" Claire asked.
"I wanted to believe him."
Evelyn's voice dropped.
"I wanted him to win."
That honesty was uglier than an excuse.
She admitted that she had always resented Claire's control of the company.
She believed Dominic had built Mercer Home Systems into what it had become and deserved ownership.
She believed Claire's travel made her selfish.
She believed a mother should stay home while a husband ran the business.
Claire listened without interrupting.
Evelyn finally looked at the courthouse doors.
"But he told me the money would remain in Northstar until the board voted."
Rachel opened the notebook.
It contained dates, account numbers, and a handwritten password hint.
"Why keep this?"
"Because I stopped trusting him two weeks ago."
Claire almost laughed.
"You stopped trusting him, but you still helped him torment my son?"
Evelyn flinched.
"I thought Leo's tantrums were being exaggerated."
"You were there."
Evelyn had no answer.
Rachel pointed to a line in the notebook.
"This number."
Evelyn nodded.
"A private bank in Grand Cayman."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"So the money is already gone."
"Maybe not."
Evelyn explained that Dominic had set the second transfer to release automatically after a corporate authorization code was entered.
The code required two parts.
One came from Evelyn's account.
The other came from the office safe.
Claire remembered the metal cash box Dominic carried out of the fire.
"The box."
Evelyn nodded.
"He keeps the token inside it."
Rachel immediately called the bank's fraud department.
They learned the international wire had been initiated but had not yet completed final settlement.
There was a narrow window to challenge it.
For the first time that day, Claire felt hope.
Then Rachel asked Evelyn where the metal box was.
Evelyn looked toward the parking lot.
Dominic's car was gone.
"He had it when we arrived this morning."
Claire's phone rang.
It was Nathan.
His voice was breathless.
"Claire, Dominic just went into the office building."
"The company office?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Nathan paused.
"The board is meeting in thirty minutes."
Claire looked at Rachel.
May you like
Dominic had lost in court.
Now he was going to try to win the company before the bank could stop him.
