Chapter 1 - The Sound Behind the Door.

At nine forty-seven on a rainy Tuesday night, Elena Brooks was supposed to be polishing the upstairs hallway, not dancing in the nursery.

She knew that because Mrs. Vale had repeated the rule twice before dinner and once more before disappearing downstairs with her clipboard.

The Curto house ran on rules, schedules, quiet footsteps, and doors that were expected to remain exactly where they had been left.

Elena had survived her first two weeks by respecting every one of those rules.

Then Nora laughed.

The tiny sound came from the crib beside the window, sudden and bright enough to make Elena stop with a yellow-gloved hand frozen around a dust cloth.

Lily stared at her sister for half a second before she laughed too.

Elena looked from one little girl to the other, hardly trusting what she had heard.

The twins had watched her clean every evening with serious dark eyes, never crying, never smiling, and rarely making more than a soft murmur.

That night Elena had been wearing her silver headphones while wiping the crib rails, and an old swing song had made her shoulders move without permission.

Nora had noticed.

Elena lifted one eyebrow, bounced once on the balls of her white sneakers, and waved both yellow gloves in the air.

The twins stared.

Elena spun once with exaggerated seriousness and nearly bumped into the rocking chair.

Nora burst into laughter.

Lily clapped so hard that her pajama sleeves slid over her hands.

Elena forgot the hallway, the clipboard, and every warning Mrs. Vale had given her.

She danced like nobody was watching, because for the first time since she had entered that house, the children looked like children instead of two quiet little shadows.

The nursery door opened behind her.

Elena did not hear it through the headphones.

Adrian Curto stood in the doorway wearing a black suit jacket over an open white shirt, his expression hard enough to stop a board meeting.

He had returned home twenty minutes earlier than expected.

He had already noticed the unfinished hallway.

Now he was looking at his new maid waving rubber gloves over her head while his daughters bounced inside their cribs.

His jaw tightened.

He took one step into the room.

Then Lily laughed again.

Adrian stopped.

The anger remained on his face, but it no longer knew where to go.

He looked past Elena toward the cribs.

Nora squealed when Elena attempted a ridiculous sideways shuffle.

Adrian's shoulders lowered by an inch.

His eyes widened.

“They're… laughing?”

Elena heard nothing and continued dancing.

Adrian watched his daughters clap for her as if she were the greatest performer they had ever seen.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to move.

Elena finally turned, saw him, and went completely still.

She tore off her headphones so quickly that one side caught in her hair.

“Mr. Curto, I can explain.”

The twins fell quiet at the sound of his voice and the sudden end of the dance.

Elena lowered her hands, expecting a reprimand she knew she had earned.

Adrian looked at her.

Then he looked at Nora.

Then at Lily.

His expression changed in a way Elena had never seen during the two weeks she had worked in the house.

The tension around his mouth disappeared.

His eyes softened.

“Don't stop.”

Elena blinked.

“Sir?”

“Whatever you were doing.”

Adrian swallowed before he finished the sentence.

“Don't stop.”

Elena slowly lifted one yellow-gloved hand.

Nora's face brightened at once.

Elena made the glove bow to her like a tiny stage actor.

The room filled with laughter again.

Adrian turned his head toward the window for a moment, as if he did not want anyone to see what the sound did to him.

When he looked back, his voice was quieter.

“Thank you for making them smile.”

Elena did not know what answer belonged in a moment like that.

She simply nodded.

Adrian stayed beside the door while she resumed the dance, and the most feared man in the house watched his daughters laugh until the song ended.

For the first time, Elena noticed a framed photograph on the far dresser.

It showed Adrian beside a smiling brunette woman holding two newborn babies.

A black ribbon had been tucked behind one corner of the frame.

Elena's chest tightened with understanding.

The twins were not naturally quiet.

This house had taught them quiet.

A minute later, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Mrs. Vale appeared at the nursery entrance with her clipboard pressed to her chest.

She saw Elena dancing.

She saw Adrian watching.

Most importantly, she saw the twins laughing.

Her face did not soften.

It went pale.

“Mr. Curto,” she said carefully, “may I speak with you alone?”

Adrian did not take his eyes off his daughters.

“Tomorrow.”

Mrs. Vale's fingers tightened around the clipboard.

“There is something you need to know about Miss Brooks.”

Elena's smile disappeared.

Adrian finally turned.

The nursery became quiet again.

Mrs. Vale looked directly at Elena and delivered the words with chilling calm.

“She broke the one rule your wife made me promise never to break.”
