Chapter 13 - The Photograph That Could Not Be True.

Adrian called Elena before he called anyone else.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Is everything okay with the girls?”

“Yes.”

He heard her exhale.

“Then what happened?”

“I need to ask where you were at eight twenty tonight.”

There was a pause.

“At my sister's apartment in Queens.”

“Can anyone confirm that?”

“My sister, her husband, their building camera, and the pizza delivery guy.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“I believe you.”

“That sounds like the beginning of a sentence I am not going to like.”

He told her about the photograph.

Elena went quiet.

“Send it to me.”

Nathan forwarded the image.

Elena called back less than a minute later.

“That isn't me.”

“It looks like you from behind.”

“Look at the shoes.”

Adrian enlarged the image.

The woman wore white sneakers similar to Elena's.

Then he noticed the heel.

Elena's work shoes had a navy stripe around the sole.

These did not.

“Also,” Elena said, “my uniform is in my suitcase.”

Adrian looked more closely.

The maid uniform in the photograph was slightly different at the collar.

It was not Elena's.

Someone had staged the image with a similar outfit, long brown hair, and a camera angle that hid the face.

Nathan arrived twenty minutes later.

The welfare reviewer had received three photographs and a statement claiming Elena had returned after midnight on multiple occasions.

Adrian showed him the shoe detail.

Nathan nodded.

“This is now useful evidence of fabrication.”

“Who sent it?”

“Anonymous email.”

“Can we trace it?”

“Maybe, but not quickly enough for tomorrow morning.”

Adrian looked toward the nursery monitor on his desk.

Nora rolled over in her sleep.

Lily's hand rested through the crib bars toward her sister.

Adrian's expression hardened with resolve.

“We do not need to win an argument tomorrow.”

Nathan raised an eyebrow.

“We need to tell the truth.”

“That will help with the argument.”

Adrian nodded.

The next morning, Elena returned wearing ordinary clothes instead of a uniform.

The difference mattered.

She was not walking in as staff.

She was walking in as a witness to what had happened.

The independent reviewer, Dr. Maren Cole, arrived at nine.

She was neither warm nor cold.

She asked direct questions and listened carefully to the answers.

Adrian provided Claire's letter, the verified video clips, security logs, and the withdrawn complaint record.

Elena described the night she had danced.

She did not exaggerate.

She admitted she had ignored her assigned hallway because the twins had laughed.

Dr. Cole almost smiled.

“Professionally imperfect,” she said.

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

“Dangerous?”

“No.”

Adrian spoke next.

“The dangerous part was a household culture where joy started feeling like a rule violation.”

Dr. Cole looked at him for several seconds.

“That is unusually candid.”

“I am unusually late.”

The twins came into the room with their nanny.

Dr. Cole observed them without turning the moment into a test.

Nora ran to Adrian first.

That surprised everyone except Adrian.

He picked her up.

Lily followed and leaned against his leg.

Then both girls saw Elena.

They smiled.

Elena waved but stayed where she was.

She let them choose.

Lily walked over and handed her the stuffed rabbit.

Elena made it bow.

Lily laughed.

Dr. Cole wrote nothing down for several seconds.

She simply watched.

After the interview, she asked to speak to Adrian alone.

Elena went to the kitchen.

Nathan joined her.

“You handled that well.”

“I told the truth.”

“That is often harder.”

Elena looked toward the hall.

“Do you think Vivian sent the new photographs?”

Nathan shook his head.

“She has counsel now, and her attorney has already disavowed them.”

“Mrs. Vale?”

“She surrendered her devices yesterday.”

Elena frowned.

“Then who is left?”

Nathan's phone buzzed.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

“What?” Elena asked.

“The anonymous email was sent from the guest Wi-Fi network here.”

Elena stared at him.

“Last night?”

“Yes.”

“But Mrs. Vale was gone, Vivian was gone, and I was gone.”

Nathan nodded.

“Which means someone currently in this house staged those photographs.”

Adrian appeared in the doorway behind them.

He had heard the last sentence.

His face went cold.

“There are only eleven staff members left.”

Elena looked toward the staircase.

May you like

Above them, a floorboard creaked.

Someone was listening.
