Chapter 7 - The File With Elena's Name.

Vivian placed the document on the foyer table as if she were laying down evidence in court.

Adrian did not pick it up immediately.

He looked at Elena first.

“What is she referring to?”

Elena forced herself to breathe slowly.

“My last employer ended my contract after their mother moved in and took over childcare.”

Vivian gave a thin smile.

“That is one version.”

Adrian unfolded the paper.

It was a printed complaint from the domestic staffing agency Elena had used the previous year.

The complaint accused her of ignoring household instructions and becoming overly attached to a child in her care.

Elena felt heat rise into her face.

“That complaint was withdrawn.”

Vivian crossed her arms.

“After a settlement.”

“There was no settlement.”

Adrian looked up.

“Was it withdrawn?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the child's mother wrote the agency herself and said the complaint had been filed by her own mother without permission.”

Vivian scoffed.

“Convenient.”

Elena turned toward her.

“How did you get a confidential agency record?”

Vivian did not answer.

Adrian asked the same question.

This time his tone carried more weight.

Vivian lifted her chin.

“I made calls.”

“You obtained a withdrawn personnel complaint overnight?”

“I was worried.”

“You were prepared.”

Vivian's face tightened.

Adrian folded the paper carefully.

“I will verify this myself.”

Elena nodded.

“That is fair.”

Vivian seemed disappointed by the lack of resistance.

Adrian called the staffing agency from his office while Elena waited outside.

She could hear only fragments of the conversation.

“Yes, I have her permission to discuss it.”

“No, I am not asking for anything confidential beyond the status.”

A long pause followed.

Then Adrian said, “Understood.”

He returned five minutes later.

“The complaint was formally withdrawn and marked unsubstantiated.”

Vivian's lips pressed together.

Adrian looked at her.

“Who gave it to you?”

Vivian picked up her handbag.

“I am not staying to be interrogated in my sister's home.”

“This is my home.”

Vivian looked toward the stairs.

“And it is supposed to be theirs.”

She left before he could stop her.

The front door closed with a controlled click that somehow felt louder than a slam.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“I understand if you want me to leave until this is sorted out.”

“No.”

“You barely know me.”

“I know someone searched for dirt on you the same night a key appeared outside your room.”

“That doesn't prove the two things are connected.”

“No, but it makes coincidence expensive.”

Elena almost smiled despite herself.

Adrian did not.

His attorney arrived at noon.

Nathan Hale was a calm man in his forties who seemed incapable of being impressed by wealth, anger, or family drama.

He listened to the entire story without interrupting.

When Adrian finished, Nathan opened a leather folder.

“There is another reason Vivian may be pushing this now.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“What reason?”

Nathan looked toward Elena.

“Some of this concerns the children and their family trust.”

Elena stood.

“I can leave.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You are part of what is happening.”

Nathan continued.

Claire's father had created a trust for the twins.

The trust did not control Adrian's custody, but it did require periodic welfare reports before major distributions for education and long-term care.

Vivian was one of three advisory relatives allowed to submit concerns to the independent trustee.

“She submitted one this morning,” Nathan said.

Adrian went very still.

“What did she say?”

“That the household is unstable, staff boundaries are unclear, and the children are forming unhealthy attachments.”

Elena felt sick.

Nathan turned a page.

“She specifically names Miss Brooks.”

Adrian stood.

“This is absurd.”

“It may be, but the trustee will review it.”

“Then let them.”

Nathan raised one hand.

“There is more.”

Adrian waited.

“The complaint includes a photograph.”

Nathan slid a print across the table.

Elena stared at it.

It showed her in the nursery wearing headphones and dancing while the twins stood in their cribs.

The photograph had been taken from outside the doorway.

It captured the exact moment before Adrian entered on the first night.

Elena looked at him.

“You weren't there yet.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“No.”

Nathan pointed to the timestamp.

The image had been taken nine seconds before the hallway camera recorded Adrian approaching the nursery.

Someone else had been watching Elena dance.

Someone had planned to use that moment before anyone knew the twins would laugh.

Nathan turned the photograph over.

A note was printed on the back.

Adrian read it silently.

Then he handed it to Elena.

The message was short.

“This is how she gets control.”

Elena looked toward the nursery ceiling as a terrible possibility formed in her mind.

“What if they never wanted me fired because I broke a rule?”

May you like

Adrian's eyes met hers.

“What if they wanted you fired because the girls changed when you were here?”
