Chapter 12 - The Resignation on the Desk.

Adrian found Elena's resignation beneath his coffee cup at six forty-five the next morning.

He read it once.

Then he read it again as if the words might rearrange themselves into something else.

Elena had kept the letter short.

She thanked him for the opportunity.

She said she would cooperate with the welfare review.

She said the twins deserved a home where no employee could be used as leverage in a family argument.

Adrian found her packing folded uniforms into a suitcase in the blue guest suite.

“You are leaving.”

Elena looked up.

“Yes.”

“Because of Vivian?”

“Because of all of it.”

“She is gone.”

“Mrs. Vale is gone.”

“The complaint is falling apart.”

Elena zipped the side pocket of her suitcase.

“That does not change what this house became in two days.”

Adrian stood in the doorway.

“I can guarantee your job.”

“This is not about my job.”

“Then tell me what it is about.”

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

“It is about Nora crying because adults keep making decisions around her like she is a piece of evidence.”

Adrian looked away.

“It is about Lily watching every face in the room before she decides whether she is allowed to smile.”

His jaw tightened.

“And it is about you being grateful to me for making them laugh when they should not need a maid to make their father enter the nursery.”

The sentence hurt.

Elena knew it hurt.

She did not take it back.

Adrian's voice became quiet.

“You think I failed them.”

“I think you were grieving.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I think grief made you hand too much of their lives to people who sounded certain.”

He said nothing.

Elena softened her tone without softening the truth.

“You love them.”

“I do.”

“Then let them see it without an appointment.”

Adrian leaned against the doorframe.

“They ask for you.”

“I know.”

“What am I supposed to tell them?”

“The truth in words they can understand.”

“That you left?”

“That I went home.”

He looked at her suitcase.

“This was your home for three weeks.”

“It was my workplace.”

The distinction landed between them.

Adrian nodded slowly.

“You are right.”

Elena had expected resistance.

The simple agreement made leaving harder.

A knock sounded behind him.

The nanny stood in the hall holding Nora.

Lily walked beside her clutching the rabbit.

Both girls saw Elena's suitcase.

Nora's face crumpled.

“Yena go?”

Elena knelt.

“Yena goes home.”

Nora reached for her.

Elena hugged her carefully.

Lily pressed against Elena's shoulder too.

Adrian looked away, giving them privacy he could not really give in the narrow hall.

Elena hummed the four-note melody.

The twins quieted.

Then she added the old swing rhythm that had started everything.

Nora smiled through her tears.

Lily gave a tiny laugh.

Adrian watched.

He looked as if he finally understood that Elena's gift had never been a dance.

It had been permission.

Permission to be noisy.

Permission to be silly.

Permission to remember Claire without turning every memory into a tragedy.

Elena stood.

“I will be here for the review tomorrow.”

Adrian nodded.

“And after?”

“I don't know.”

She carried her suitcase downstairs.

Every step sounded too loud in the quiet house.

At the front door, Adrian stopped her one last time.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“For hiring you to clean a house and then expecting you to carry what the rest of us refused to face.”

Elena looked at him.

“That is a good start.”

A small smile touched his face.

It disappeared quickly.

“Will you answer if the girls ask to call you?”

Elena hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Thank you.”

She left.

That evening, Adrian canceled two meetings.

He sat on the nursery floor in gray sweatpants while Nora stacked blocks on his knee.

Lily pushed the stuffed rabbit into his hand.

He tried the ridiculous glove dance without gloves.

It was terrible.

Nora stared at him.

Adrian tried again.

Lily giggled.

He froze at the sound.

Then he kept going.

By the third attempt, both girls were laughing.

Adrian laughed too.

He had forgotten what his own laugh sounded like in that room.

At bedtime, he wound Claire's music box.

The four notes played softly.

He did not leave when they ended.

He stayed until both girls slept.

Downstairs, Nathan Hale had left a voicemail.

The welfare reviewer had received an anonymous new packet.

It included photographs suggesting Elena had secretly returned to the property after resigning.

Adrian looked at the timestamp.

May you like

The pictures had been taken while Elena was already miles away.

Someone was still trying to use her name.
