Chapter 1: The Sweetest Deception

The city lights of Manhattan flickered like scattered diamonds far below.

Elias sat at the corner table of the exclusive skyline restaurant.

He adjusted his dark tie and checked his watch.

His fiancée, Seraphina, had stepped away to the powder room.

Two identical chocolate mini-cakes sat untouched on the crisp white tablecloth.

Each dessert was garnished with fresh raspberries and a flake of edible gold leaf.

Elias’s bodyguard, Marcus, stood a few feet away with his hands clasped.

Suddenly, a small commotion broke the quiet ambiance of the dining room.

A young girl in a grey zip-up hoodie darted past the maître d'.

She looked entirely out of place in the upscale establishment.

Marcus stepped forward to intercept her.

Before the bodyguard could react, the girl reached Elias's table.

She grabbed his sleeve with trembling hands.

Her wide eyes were filled with absolute panic.

"Sir, don't eat that dessert."

Elias froze, taken aback by her sudden appearance.

"She put something in your cake."

Marcus reached out to pull the girl away.

"Please switch the plates before she comes back!"

Elias looked at the girl's desperate face, then down at the two cakes.

His heart hammered against his ribs.

Instinct took over reason.

He reached out and grabbed his dessert plate.

In one smooth motion, he swapped it with Seraphina's plate across the table.

The plates settled with a soft clink just as footsteps approached.

The young girl vanished into the shadows of the restaurant as quickly as she had appeared.

Marcus stepped back into his stoic position, masking his confusion.

Seraphina glided back into the dining room.

Her long red hair cascaded perfectly over her elegant black evening dress.

She adjusted her dress strap with a smooth, calculated movement.

She sat down gracefully in her chair opposite Elias.

"I'm sorry to keep you waiting, darling."

Elias forced a calm smile.

"Not at all."

Seraphina picked up her silver dessert fork.

Her charming smile did not reach her cold eyes.

"Sweetheart, I made sure they prepared it just right."

She sliced off a piece of the rich chocolate cake.

Elias held his breath and watched her closely.

She placed the bite into her mouth and closed her eyes in apparent delight.

The trap was sprung, but the prey had changed.
