Chapter 9: The Boardroom Trap
Victor Sterling adjusted his expensive silk tie with a smug, victorious smile.
He stood proudly at the head of the massive mahogany table in the Vance Enterprises boardroom.
The confused corporate board members murmured nervously among themselves.
"Gentlemen, we all know Elias is currently incapacitated," Victor announced smoothly.
"For the stability of the market, I am assuming emergency executive control."
He reached out to press his thumb against the biometric scanner on the main console.
Instead of glowing an approving green, the digital scanner flashed a harsh, warning red.
The massive presentation screen behind him suddenly flickered to life.
Elias Vance’s face appeared on the giant monitor, looking perfectly healthy and entirely unamused.
Victor stumbled backward, his smug smile vanishing instantly.
"Elias?" Victor gasped, the color completely draining from his scarred face.
"You look surprised, Victor," Elias said smoothly through the boardroom speakers.
"I assure you, reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated."
"Your hostile takeover attempt is officially denied."
The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open forcefully.
Six federal agents marched into the room wearing dark tactical windbreakers.
"Victor Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate espionage and attempted murder," the lead agent declared.
Victor looked frantically around the room, realizing there was absolutely no escape.
An agent firmly snapped heavy steel cuffs around Victor's wrists.
Elias watched the live video feed silently as his rival was dragged out of the building in disgrace.
He reached out and closed the secure laptop sitting on his penthouse desk.
The empire was finally safe from the dangerous shadows that had surrounded it.
Elias stood up and walked out into the warm, sunlit living room.
Lily was sitting happily on the plush carpet, drawing quietly with a new box of colored pencils.
She looked up and smiled brightly when he entered the room.
"Is the bad man gone now?" she asked innocently.
"Yes, Lily," Elias answered with a deep, comforting sigh.
"The bad men are all gone for good."
He sat down on the floor next to her and looked closely at her colorful drawing.
She had drawn a beautiful picture of a tall building with a small girl and a tall man standing safely inside.

His massive corporate empire suddenly meant nothing compared to the brave child sitting beside him.
