Chapter 8: The Morning Reckoning

The morning sun cast a cold, harsh light across the penthouse floor.
Elias stood near the window, watching the city wake up below him.
The financial news networks were already broadcasting the fabricated breaking story.
Billionaire CEO Elias Vance was reportedly in critical condition after a sudden medical emergency.
Marcus walked into the living room holding his glowing secure tablet.
"The bait has been successfully taken, Elias."
"Victor Sterling just called an emergency board meeting at your company headquarters."
"He is moving to enact the hostile takeover contingency plan."
Elias nodded slowly, feeling a grim sense of absolute satisfaction.
"Let him walk right into the empty vault, Marcus."
A soft groan echoed from the guest bedroom down the long hallway.
Seraphina was finally waking up from her chemically induced sleep.
Elias walked slowly down the corridor and pushed the heavy wooden door open.
Seraphina rubbed her temples, blinking heavily against the bright morning light.
She looked around the unfamiliar, securely locked guest room in complete confusion.
Then her gaze found Elias standing perfectly healthy in the doorway.
Her beautiful face instantly drained of all remaining color.
"Elias..." she stammered weakly, her voice trembling.
"You are supposed to be..."
"Dead?" Elias finished the dark sentence for her with a cold tone.
He tossed her monogrammed leather notebook onto the foot of the bed.
Seraphina stared at the damning physical evidence with wide, terrified eyes.
"Your dangerous partner, Victor, is currently walking into a federal trap."
"I know absolutely everything about your pathetic liquidation plan."
Tears of genuine panic finally spilled down Seraphina's pale cheeks.
"He forced me to do it, Elias."
"He threatened to ruin my entire family if I did not cooperate with him."
Elias looked at the woman he had almost married with complete, icy detachment.
"You can tell that tragic story to the federal authorities."
Marcus stepped into the room, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
"The police are waiting in the private lobby downstairs, boss."
Elias turned his back on Seraphina's desperate, sobbing pleas.
He closed the heavy guest room door firmly behind him.
